McLaren Completes 50 Glorious Years in the World of Motor Sport
|   Wednesday, February 06, 2013
McLaren has completed five decades of foundation and the firm has seen glory days as well as rough patches during its tenure in the market. The MP4 28 race car was showcased for the first time to commemorate the occasion and McLaren bosses expect this car to win the 2013 edition of Formula One. How McLaren started out small to reach its lofty position today is a story worth telling and is history in itself.

McLaren was initially formed as Bruce McLaren Motor Racing back in 1963 to enable young Kiwi motor sport enthusiast Bruce McLaren to participate in the Australian Tasman Series.
The company initially functioned out of a small garage in South London and entered races since 1960. The company tasted success for the first time in the second half of 1960.

Bruce McLaren along with teammate Denny Hulme dominated the track and the initial vehicles were powered by massive engines from Chevrolet. The M7, M6A and the M8 are examples of such high power vehicles. McLaren and Hulme won every Can Am race in 1969 quite efficiently and this was evidently due to McLaren's attention to detailing and innovative and efficient engineering. McLaren entered Formula One in 1966, quitting Cooper to drive for his own firm and won the same season.

He had won three championships for Cooper earlier however this was the first time for McLaren. Bruce McLaren won at Monaco Grand Prix even though the vehicle had let him down during the initial stages. McLaren won at Belgium with the M7A while Hulme went on to add two more trophies later on. McLaren had officially arrived at the global racing scenario when the team was struck by tragedy.

Bruce McLaren succumbed to injuries in 1970 while testing a Can Am vehicle at Good Wood. The company was on the verge of collapsing when Teddy Mayer decided to take reign of the company. Teddy was involved with McLaren since its early days and this gave him imminent control and knowledge of the way the firm functioned. Under Teddy, McLaren won its first championship in 1974 while securing a podium finish in 1976.

Considering McLaren's consecutive success stories, a rivalry developed with Ferrari which continues even till date. Even though McLaren was quite successful, Chief Sponsor Phillip Morris encouraged a merger with Project Four Racing in 1980. Company executive Roy Dennis was made McLaren's Team Principal and this marked the beginning of McLaren's success story where McLaren turned out to be the pioneer of composite structure in the sport.

McLaren started manufacturing their own race cars although the twin turbo charged V6 engines were sourced from Porsche. Signing up with Honda also marked another era of innovation and McLaren dominated the work of auto sports through the 90s. McLaren paired up with Mercedes after the end of the contract with Honda and this brought forward amazing inventions for both automotive giants. Mika Hakkinen and Lewis Hamilton were the most successful drivers in this partnership and they won the 2008 championship together.
