McLaren 12C to be Axed - Official Word Reveals
|   Sunday, April 13, 2014
McLaren has received unexpected volumes of sales inquiries and information regarding their recently unveiled 650S Coupe and Spider. So much so, that they now plan to axe their high selling MP4 12C. Initially termed as a replacement vehicle for their 12C, insiders were reluctant to name this vehicle as such, as no plans were originally made to axe this production vehicle.

However, there is no point keeping two similar type vehicles in class. The 650S can do everything that the 12C is capable of, in a better manner.
Hence, it would easily eat into 12C's sales, which would result in ultimate losses. This as a result needed to be prevented. Experts have been surveying market conditions for quite a while now and they have finally termed the 650S, as a worthy replacement to their 12C.

We have reviewed both variants of the 12C here previously and you should definitely visit the appropriate links, if you haven't done so yet. The 12C was launched back in 2011 with a vision and 3,500 units of this car has been sold till date. Priced at £176,000, this vehicle was the best seller at the time, till McLaren came up with their P1 later on. Despite both vehicles being in completely different segments – both price and specification wise – P1 sales grew at a higher average.

With the kind of response evoked by the 650S, McLaren is confident of securing high sales margins and profit. Hence, keeping the 12C in line was not a viable option. Several modifications have been announced for the current 12C owners to keep them happy and a list of interior and performance modifications are in line too. Technology wise, the 12C can be upgraded time and again and this is precisely what is planned at this moment.

An aerodynamic upgrade package is also on the cards, while drag reduction methods should soon be available too. These are being offered to enhance sales of the last generation 12C, although their success rate in the market is not guaranteed. Reverse parking cameras and sensors, along with DAB radio are to be included too, each sporting a specific price tag.

McLaren says that they will be upgrading to the 650S within the next six months and we expect 12C sales to subside within this specified time frame. Showcased at Geneva earlier this year, McLaren's 650S caught our eye. We spied this vehicle testing before, although without official confirmation being available, we thought it was an upgrade to the current generation P1. Design elements on both these vehicles are somewhat similar, hence this confusion.

Powered by a 3.1 liter turbo charged V8 engine designed by McLaren, this vehicle is capable of displacing 641 BHP (hence the name 650S!), along with 500 ft lb of torque. Average sprint time from 0 – 60 MPH is calculated to be within 3 seconds flat, while top speeds of 207+ MPH, should also be a reality, if the engineers do not plan on limiting performance electronically. Stay tuned for latest updates.
