Mazda Working on Resurrecting the RX-7 by 2016
|   Wednesday, January 15, 2014
Mazda plans on resurrecting its iconic RX-7, based on modern engineering and technology. First and foremost, this vehicle will be designed on a light weight chassis, on a two seated coupe layout. The iconic boxer engine will be replaced in favor of a rotary engine, displacing 250 BHP, while Mazda is hopeful of an end 2015 / early 2016 launch date. Even though this vehicle is yet to be officially approved for production, high demand has forced Mazda to reconsider upgrading its original RX-7.

If implemented successfully, the next generation MX-5 should also feature a similar power train and chassis. Official word has just come in and we have been told there are no concrete plans as of yet, although our insider has hinted at a launch quite soon. Mazda has been working on rotary engines for quite some time now. They plan on proving their superiority over the older boxer engines. Hence, their introduction to a popular model is a smart way to prove its worth to masses.

Early renderings of the RX-7 and MX-5 are similar to their predecessors, even though final variants should feature some very important design modifications. A futuristic twist is needed to make these vehicles commercially viable in non Asian markets, while a minor change in aerodynamics is also needed.

The best aspect of these vehicles is low weight, which Mazda plan on continuing on these variants as well. Mazda Chief Designer, Ikuo Maeda is busy working on a probable design, which would do justice to this brand name. Maeda jokes that he doesn't know what the next generation coupe will look like, even though he plans on designing it, before retiring.

This proves Mazda's unwillingness to comment on this scenario as of yet. A conventional power train, tuned for a balance between fuel efficiency and performance, is best suited on both the MX-5 and RX-7, while Mazda is working to get it done. Even though their equation is yet to add up, we are hopeful of Mazda coming out with a successful vehicle, this time too. Stay tuned as we bring you the latest updates from Mazda.
