Mazda To Reinvent Gasoline Engine
|   Wednesday, September 13, 2017
Mazda just introduced the “Sustainable Zoom-Zoom 2030”, a new long-term vision of technological development. SKYACTIV-X will be the first commercial gasoline engine which will use compression ignition.

1. Sustainable Zoom-Zoom 2030
Mazda thinks its mission is to make possible a more beautiful planet, to enrich the lives of people, but also society. The company will continue to look for ways to inspire people through integrated values in cars.

As far as protecting Terra, Mazda proposes the following:
- Extending measures to reduce carbon dioxide emissions from a “well-to-wheel” perspective, taking into account emissions over the whole life cycle of the vehicle.
- Establishing the goal of reducing the company's “well-to-wheel” carbon dioxide emissions to 50% of 2010 levels by 2030, and achieving a 90% reduction by 2050.
- Achieving these goals with a policy that prioritizes cleaner emission efficiency measures that apply to everyday life.
- In line with this policy, efforts will continue to be made to optimize the internal combustion engine, which will drive most of the cars globally for many years to come, and may therefore have the greatest contribution to reducing emissions of dioxide carbon, and combining results with efficient electrical technologies.
- Starting in 2019, the launch of electric vehicles and other mobility technologies in regions using a large share of renewable energy or restricting certain vehicles to reduce air pollution.
With regard to the protection of human society, Mazda proposes:
- Developing more advanced safety technologies under the Mazda Proactive Safety philosophy to eliminate traffic accidents.
- Continue to improve fundamental safety features such as steering position, pedal positioning and visibility, and standardize them on all models.
- Further promote the standardization of advanced i-ACTIVESENSE safety equipment, which helps drivers recognize and assess possible hazards. In addition to Japan, where they already have become standard, these technologies will gradually become a common sight in other markets as early as 2018.
- Start testing for autonomous driving technologies, in line with the Mazda Co-Pilot Concept2 in 2020, to make the system standard on all models by 2025.

2. SKYACTIV-X next-generation engines
SKYACTIV-X is the world's first commercial gasoline engine that uses compression ignition, the mixture of air and fuel spontaneously igniting by compressing the piston.

The new combustion method, called the Spark Controlled Compression Ignition, surpassed two issues that prevented the commercialization of compression-ignition gasoline engines: maximizing the area where compression ignition is possible and achieving a smooth transition between spark ignition and compression.

Compression-ignition, enables combustion with very lean mixture. It improves engine efficiency by up to 20-30 percent compared to the current generation SKYACTIV-G, and up to 35-45 percent compared to the Mazda gasoline engine with the same displacement from 2008.
With high efficiency on a wide range of rotations and load levels, the engine allows more flexibility in gear selection, offering both fuel economy and superior driving performance.

Looking ahead, Mazda hopes to contribute to creating a future where people, the planet and society can coexist with cars.
All these efforts aim to enrich people's lives through the experiences of a car and to become a brand with which customers feel a strong emotional connection.
