Mazda To Launch Fourth MX-5 Generation
|   Monday, July 07, 2014
The Japanese from Mazda have announced the official release date of the new MX-5. The Roadster will have a lower weight by about 100 kilograms compared to the current generation.

Mazda has officially confirmed the launch of the new generation of the MX-5, scheduled for September 4, 2014. The model will be presented simultaneously at the Auto Show in New York as well as events held in Japan and Europe.

The future MX-5 will have a lower weight by at least 100 kilograms compared to the current generation, and will benefit from more powerful and fuel efficient engines.
In addition, we will see an increase in the car's body stiffness and the center of gravity will be moved down.

Like all new models from Mazda, the future MX-5 will have a SKYACTIV chassis, which it will share with the future Alfa Romeo Spider. Unlike other SKYACTIV chassis released so far into production, it will have a rear-wheel drive configuration, but will have all the technological advantages of this solution.

The deal with Alfa Romeo is such that the two companies can share initial investment costs and increase profits. Even so, the Alfa Romeo Spider, using the same technology as the new Mazda MX-5 will not be seen until the end of 2015, therefore granting Mazda a clear advantage on the roadster segment.

SKYACTIV engines and transmissions are also included and the design language (inspired by the Shinari Concept revealed earlier this year) is expected to be in accordance with the latest models launched by the Japanese manufacturer, respectively the CX-5, Mazda 6 and Mazda 3.

When the Shinari concept was revealed, Ikuo Maeda, general manager of Mazda's design division declared that "this design will lead to the next generation of Mazda design and will lead to other elements." This basically confirms that the MX-5 will be among the first to adopt Mazda's new "Kodo - Soul of Motion" design language.

On the list of the MX-5's future powertrain we can find the 1.5-liter engine, SKYACTIV-G, already found already on the Mazda 3. It delivers 100 horsepower and 150 Nm of torque, and has a reported performance of going from 0 to 100 km / h in 6.5 seconds. Even if resources are not very generous, the unit promises to make amends with enviable fuel efficiency, taking the example of its compact brother that manages to beat even smaller displacement turbo engines.
The engine range is expected to include stronger units, although it is not clear if a supercharged unit will be present.

Chief designer Peter Birtwhistle stated for Auto Express that the new model will be more male-oriented than the current car. "It's a tight edgy little car that is going to appeal to a broader range of people. We know the clich├ęs about the MX-5 as it gets older, but this will position it differently. I think it'll attract a lot of young guys. It is a standalone product for us. You sometimes think after three generations let's start afresh with a clean sheet of paper. But you have a massive customer base who have a connection with the previous car, so you have to tread carefully."

The present MX-5 is known as the MX-5 Miata in North America and Roadster in Japan.
