Mazda MX-5 Will Have A 1.5-Liter Engine And 100 Horsepower
|   Wednesday, March 26, 2014
Mazda has finalized the details of the new MX-5. The roadster will hit the streets of Europe in early 2015. This model will be equipped with a 1.5 liter engine, now found on the Mazda3.

Perhaps the most popular roadster in history, the current Mazda MX-5 is preparing for an exchange of generations. The Japanese model will make way for its descendant by the end of this year, with showrooms scheduled to start trading from 2015 onwards.

The fourth generation of the Japanese model uses a light platform developed by Mazda on the new SKYACTIV principles.
No wonder that it promises a reduction in total mass of about 100 kg, compared to the current model.

Using many elements made of aluminum, the rear drive platform will host a light body, modeled after the Kodo design philosophy, found already in the Mazda 3 and Mazda 6.

On the list of engines, we find the naturally aspirated 1.5-liter SKYACTIV-G unit, already mounted on the Mazda 3. It delivers 100 hp and a torque of 150 Nm. Even if raw resources are not very generous, the unit promises to make amends with the enviable efficiency, taking the example of its compact brother that manages to beat even smaller displacement turbo engines.

However, Mazda will also guarantee a generous engine too, a 2.0-liter SKYACTIV-G modified to provide more than 150 horsepower.

The official debut will coincide with the celebration of 25 years since the introduction of the first Mazda MX-5, an opportunity for the Japanese to celebrate properly.

Even so, the new generation will be placed under financial uncertainty. The Japanese manufacturer is somehow uncertain of the success the roadster will have in a declining market and populated by more and more competitors.

Just for economic reasons, Mazda has agreed to join forces with Fiat-Chrysler Alliance to give birth to MX-5. In turn, the Italians will use the platform to develop a roadster under the Alfa Romeo logo. It will be built in Italy, as per Sergio Marchionne's attempt to meet its commitments to the mother country.
"By partnering with Mazda, we will be co-operating with the recognized leader in compact rear-drive vehicle architectures in order to deliver an exciting and stylish roadster in the Alfa Romeo tradition," said CEO Sergio Marchionne.

"It is especially exciting to be collaborating with such a prestigious marque as Alfa Romeo on a new roadster based on the next-generation MX-5, which is such an iconic vehicle for Mazda and recognized as the best-selling roadster of all time" declared Takashi Yamanouchi, Mazda's Representative Director and Chairman of the Board, President and CEO.

In related news, we find that Mazda will not showcase hybrid cars in Europe before 2020. This is because it believes that it can achieve the same level of pollution with the new generation SKYACTIV engines. By using HCCI technology, the fuel mixture is compressed at a pressure and temperature so high that spark plugs are not needed. This engine will be closer to the operation of diesel engines. The result is a 30 percent improvement of the engine's thermal efficiency. Also, it will reduce fuel consumption and noxious emissions by 30 percent (down to 80 g / km).
