Mazda MX-5: Most Popular Roadster In The World Reaches Fourth Generation
|   Sunday, September 14, 2014
Mazda has just unveiled the new generation MX-5 convertible. The most popular roadster in the world has reached its fourth reprint and will be exposed to the public at the Paris Motor Show.
A fourth generation Mazda MX-5 debuted simultaneously in three corners of the world: the United States, Spain and Japan.

The next generation MX-5 is built on a completely new platform. It is the first SKYACTIV platform with rear-wheel drive. Although usually a new generation brings larger dimensions, the Mazda MX-5 opposes the current being the most compact proposal in the 25-year history of the model.
It is 105 mm shorter, but it is also 10 mm wider and 20 mm shorter in height than its predecessor. The next generation MX-5 is 3915 mm long, 1730 mm wide and 1235 mm high.

The composition of the structure is made of in large proportion of aluminum, providing a total mass 100 kilograms lighter than that of the old model. Moreover, structural rigidity is significantly increased and the center of gravity has been lowered, which makes up the premise of impeccable roadholding.

Sports lines are beautiful exacerbated on the new MX-5 with sharp optical blocks, with a generous and well shaped front grille and a front bumper ready to swallow large amounts of air to cool the engine. The side skirts, muscular lines of the posterior, 18-inch alloy rims, and wheel arches complement the sporting profile.

The back retains the symmetry of the front side, with the rear lights featuring LED lights and a sharp shape. Dual exhaust reminds everyone that we are looking at a sports car. In general terms, if we back away from the new MX-5 we might even say that it looks like the first generation BMW Z4, another hugely popular roadster.

The interior takes over the Mazda3's aesthetics, trying to be just as simplistic, with exemplary ergonomics and a multimedia display that will try to take over the main functions. The plastic used is soft alternating with glossy inserts.

The cabin is covered with a fabric folding roof and continues to provide space for two people. Likely, the trunk increased in size also.
The first encounter with the idea of a simple Japanese roadster took place in 1989 at the Chicago Auto Show. There Mazda revived the roadster concept without mechanical complications, dedicated to driving pleasure, like the legendary models of the 60s such as Alfa Romeo Spider, Lotus Elan and Triumph Spitfire.
The model was introduced under the name MX-5 Miata in the United States market. Contrary to expectations, the Miata moniker comes from old German and means "reward".

The second generation was launched in 1998 and was produced at Hiroshima, Japan, until 2005.
The third generation Mazda MX-5 was unveiled in 2005 and was immediately crowned Car of the Year in Japan.
Over three generations, the MX-5 has enjoyed a huge success and managed to become the best-selling roadster in history. Small surprise then that Mazda announced that by August 2014 it managed to sell 947,000 MX-5 units globally.
