Maserati Quattroporte - A journey down memory lane
|   Monday, December 10, 2012
Maserati launched the first generation Quattroporte super sports car in 1963 and the sixth generation of this very successful stretch lineup will be showcased early next year. Maserati had been a very successful entity back in the first quarter of the sixties and the most successful model in the lineup was the 3500 GT Coupe. Buyers showed considerable interest in the two door coupe and wanted a four door sports model. As a result Maserati went on to launch a four door version of the car.

This four door sedan, initially designed by Frua, went on to become the first generation Maserati Quattroporte. This was the first four door sedan from Maserati in the sports age. This vehicle had a top speed of 140 MPH and could carry four adults comfortably. The vehicle had a 4.1 liter V8 engine initially which was later upgraded to 4.7 liter, hence increasing the top speed to 158 MPH.

Citroen took charge of Maserati in 1968 and the firm wanted to closely study the secrets of the Italian engineering giant in an attempt to improve on their present vehicles. IT was under the Citroen administration that Maserati launched the next generation Quattroporte. This vehicle was supposed to be officially launched in 1974, but the plan never took off and the vehicle was never launched in the market.

This vehicle was tagged the Quattroporte II and was powered by a 3.0 liter V6, designed by Citroen and produced a hefty 190 BHP. Citroen however could not keep the body work intact and feature this engine at the same time. Citroen went bankrupt soon after and in 1974 Peugeot took over the reins of Citroen and Maserati alike. Peugeot however divested Maserati and the Quattroporte II never went on for mass production.

Overall, there were just 13 Quattroporte II in the market, out of which just 5 are expected to remain till today. Alejandro de Tomaso took over the reins of Maserati from Peugeot after Maserati was decommissioned and in 1979, the third generation of the Quattroporte was launched. This vehicle featured a 4.1 liter V8 engine, sported rear wheel drive and featured a lavish interior trim.

A 280 BHP producing 4.9 liter engine option was also launched later in 1986. The high quality of the trim level in the Quattroporte earned the nick of the Italian Rolls Royce. Maserati went under the ownership of Fiat in 1994 and the next generation Quattroporte was launched soon. This car however lost its identity and closely represented the Bi turbo Coupe. The vehicle was available in there distinct power train options, 2.0 liter, 2.8 liter and 3.0 liter petrol engines. The 2.8 liter variant went on to become the most popular of the lot.

Ferrari bought a 50 percent stake in Maserati from Fiat in 1997 and the fifth generation Quattroporte was launched soon in 2004. This vehicle featured a 4.7 liter engine and featured a top speed of 167 MPH. A face lifted model was also introduced later in 2009 and that is the current generation Quattroporte that is present in the market.
