Maserati Ghibli Does a Promising Job of Rivaling the BMW 5 Series
|   Monday, July 01, 2013
Maserati has finally unveiled its glorious challenger to the BMW 5 Series. This is the first vehicle launched by Maserati in this segment even though this is not the first Ghibli in production. This vehicle is powered by a Bi Turbo 2.0 liter diesel engine displacing 306 BHP and is a two door Coupe. The first model of the Ghibli originally came out in the 60s although the first Sports Coupe was launched back in the 90s.

The first Ghibli was powered by a V8 engine and was the original super car back in its days.
However, the new vehicle only shares its name with the actual Ghibli. Maserati has endowed the Ghibli with a flamboyant interior which is also found inside the Quattroporte sports coupe. The roof architecture has been enhanced while the interior trim has been completely overhauled.

Suspension and chassis modifications were also made while the Ghibli is shorter than the Quattroporte in terms of ride height. This proves that the engineers at Maserati wanted to design the Ghibli into a modern day sports coupe. The Ghibli however boasts of a highly sculpted interior and exterior and this car carries around a sense of culture with itself. Maserati has been experimenting heavily with its rides and the latest Ghibli and Quattroporte are the result of that experiment.

The Ghibli is powered by a 3.0 liter twin turbo petrol engine displacing 326 BHP while the range topping Ghibli S is powered by a similar V6 engine displacing 404 BHP. The engine is mated to either a four wheel or rear wheel drive train depending upon the customer's request. Maserati is also planning on launching a low end 3.0 liter V6 engine displacing 271 BHP to attract customers.

Maserati claims that if they launch this vehicle successfully, the company can expect to increase sales from 10,000 to 50,000 per year. The Ghibli is mated to an eight speed ZF transmission system with a multi link rear suspension system. Maserati has also added the Skyhook damper network to the Ghibli. Weight distribution is a perfect 50: 50 and this enhances the drive experience.

The latest Ghibli is also 50 kg lighter than it is predecessor while the drag coefficient is static at 0.31. The Ghibli petrol is smoother and more refined as compared to the diesel model which makes a slight humming sound every time the pedal is floored. Although this is not an engineering fault, this noise cannot be gotten rid of. The petrol engine however does not make such noise and hence gives a better overall feel.

Although the Ghibli is not as civil as the BMW 5 Series, it does a commendable job of bringing in freshness to the segment which was dominated mostly by BMW, Mercedes Benz and Audi. Maserati has added a range of electronic features to the vehicle such as Traction Control, Electronic Stability Control and Steering Assist etc. These enhance the way the car drives on road and is an important addition to the vehicle.
