Manuals Are A Small But Growing Segment of Market
|   Friday, November 07, 2014
Until recently, it looked as if the manual transmission was doomed to extinction as the vast majority of cars were equipped with automatics and manuals appeared in fewer and fewer vehicles.

In 2011, something happened and the trend began a slow reversal as the number of vehicles equipped with manuals inched up. The tiny recovery continued in 2012 and 2013. Indeed, by 2013, the manual market, though still a fraction of the overall sales picture, had grown to 452,232 cars.
By comparison, the number of manual-equipped vehicles numbered 311,618 vehicles in 2011.

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the federal outfit tasked with following numbers of transmissions sold, as bestpartstore.co.uk/opel of its overall emissions and fuel economy mission, expects the numbers to continue growing. While not giving any specific figures for 2014, the agency expects that when the final numbers are totaled for the sales year that six percent of all vehicles will be equipped with manuals.

Perhaps it has something to do with the high cost of gasoline or Parking brake and maybe more people want to continue to shift for themselves, but the numbers don't lie and a growing proportion of cars are being equipped with manuals.

It goes without saying that performance enthusiasts want their Mustang's and Corvette's equipped with manuals. Also, there are those owners of BMW's and Audi's who believe that equipping their vehicles with a manual is just the right thing to do as an automatic just does not seem to cut it. No one is saying, right now, just what the impetus is, but the manual market seems to be on the mend.

Of course, the numbers are nowhere near their high's of the 1980's and early 1990's when manual-equipped cars topped out at 25 percent of sales in 1987 and trucks topped out at 30 percent in 1990. Since then the manual market has been on a definite down-tilt until that long blip turned around three years ago.
