Major Carmakers Working on Autonomous Self Drive Cars for the Future
|   Saturday, October 19, 2013
Self drive cars have been on the vicinity of entering mass markets for quite some time now and major car makers have been testing technology and vehicles to turn this into reality. Mercedes Benz for example has been testing out their autonomous S Class vehicle on public road and they want to be the first to manufacture autonomous self driven vehicles.

Nissan on the other hand has made a very bold move by announcing its plan to launch affordable self driven vehicles by 2020.
Nissan is currently working on Blue Citizenship, a socially responsible mission with a goal to achieve zero emission norms. We plan on testing its credibility by surveying Nissan's latest Leaf based project. Advanced safety measures will also be in place. As 99 percent of all motor accidents are caused by human error, these self drive vehicles need to lower the percentage.

Nissan has developed this technology based on their Safety Shield and this technology includes rear camera and radar while this has been used on 730,000 cars till date. Some of its advanced warning systems include adaptive cruise control, lane change warning, departure warning, as well as 360 degrees camera view. The self drive Leaf feature laser sighting and this technology is quite precise when compared to general radar.

A slew of options are linked to the accelerator, brake and clutch levers although manual override measures will be in place. Autonomous driving is expected to be safer than conventional driving as machines are programmed to avoid faults, hence making them more reliable than humans. This however is theory and we need to test these claims before autonomous vehicles are allowed on the road.

Apart from general safety issues, autonomous vehicles also save human effort and energy. Nissan is hopeful that in future vehicles will be able to communicate with one another and this should create optimum balance in traffic. Self Parking is a new technology which has been used on the Leaf. Once a driver steps out of his car, after pressing a dedicated valet button, the Leaf starts analyzing available area for parking.

Nissan claims that the Leaf uses a dedicated network of GPS, laser and cameras to decide where it needs to park. The Leaf identifies a suitable location, pulls up next to it, analyzes the spot and parks itself. Sensor fusion is an advanced technology which gives the system a 360 degree view of the surrounding area. Lasers record the surrounding area while a sensor reads the happenings on a 200 meter radius.

Laser scanning is also used effectively in passing vehicles and driving effectively. An SOS button pulls the car to the sidelines and automatically dials for the local authorities. Speed limits have been brought into consideration which actuators keep pressure and other important equipment readings in check. Satellite navigation is an important part in these vehicles and Nissan's Leaf has its presence too. Apart from a set of other high end measures, these considerably simple measures make this vehicle top end and futuristic.
