Low-Cost Brand Datsun To Prepare A Mini City Car
|   Tuesday, February 04, 2014
The Renault-Nissan Alliance is currently the auto manufacturer most involved in the achievement of low-cost vehicles. First, Renault managed to strike it big with the Dacia product range (sold under the Renault logo outside of Europe). Then, Carlos Ghosn has marked the acquisition of a majority stake in the Russian manufacturer AvtoVAZ, Russia's market leader, having great potential for development.

After that, on the Asian market Nissan reintroduced the Datsun brand, with models much cheaper than those sold by the Japanese bearing the Nissan logo.
Recently, we have seen how the model will look. Furthermore, the first Datsun low-cost model will be produced in Russia and will be based on the former Lada Kalina.

But when it comes to low-cost, we remember a phrase that became an obsession at some point in the automotive world, especially since the crisis hit: the car that costs 5,000 euros. This target was exceeded by the little Tata Nano for a period in India. This has been true until they were forced to impose drastic safety limits and pollution, so technology has made the car more expensive.

A recent piece of info that is heard in the rumor mill is that Datsun, after launching the urban Go (based on Micra) and the small van Go +, is preparing for the introduction on the Indian market of an ultra-low-cost car, a true rival for Tata Nano.

Datsun, the low-cost brand recently brought back to life by the Nissan, will present at the Auto Show in Delhi (will run from February 5 to 11 at the India Expo Mart) the prototype of the aforementioned future city model. It will be developed on the new CMF modular platform (Common Family Architecture) of the Renault-Nissan Alliance.

Currently we do not know the name of the new model. It might be placed under the Go, which was developed at the Renault-Nissan research center in India, and will be produced at the Chennai plant. The car will have 5 doors and provide space for up to five passengers and a small trunk.

Autocar India confirms that the new Datsun model will be built on the new CMF modular platform. CMF does not mean, however, only a common architecture, but also a new production strategy that will cut costs up to 40 percent, and bills to suppliers at least by 20-30 percent. The revolutionary plan provides for the purchase of a larger collection of components, already assembled, pieces that until now they were shipped separately and assembled in Renault-Nissan's factories.

If prices for the Datsun Go are circulating at an equivalent of about 7,000 American dollars (5,000 euros), the price of the new mini-class model is likely to be lower than 5,000 American dollars (about 3,600 euros ). But the alliance policy is not to sell on the same markets so the Datsun is not likely to be seen in Europe.
Instead, the assumption that based on this model a mini Dacia model could be developed for the European market is running around.
