Lotus discloses the 414 E concept based on the Evora
|   Thursday, October 04, 2012
Lotus is currently working on a concept version of its economic super car, the Evora and the project is nearing completion stages. The 414 E is also inspired from the concept Infinity Emerg E and the project has been financed by the British tax payer association, Technology Strategy Board.
A total of 19 million Pounds has been placed on the innovation and if successful, the TSB investment will help design the future of the automobile industry. The TSB has been developing a few other models in the past and most of them have been commercially successful.

Lotus is being partnered in this project by Jaguar Land Rover and Nissan Automobiles – that explains the 414 Es similarity with Infinity, Nissan's daughter company. Jaguar Land Rover however decided to abandon the project mid way as they could not find the viability of where the project was headed and developed their own hybrid concept version that is being shown as the XJ e concept at the Paris International Motor Show 2012.

Lotus has also helped smaller companies gain a huge leap with the project and companies that produce batteries and other components have shot to fame and prosperity with their association with this project. The basic principle of this design was to fit the Evora with a tier 1 battery network.

This project has led to a few valuable discoveries in the form of advanced drive train features and the Synchronous Axial flux Power Vehicles which increases the engine's torque forming capacity and reduces the errors in the motor.

Some sophisticated software is also being designed at the moment and these are aimed at improving the way that a vehicle handles. The new 414 E is capable of travelling 30 miles without recharge, as claimed by Lotus and the battery can deliver sluggish performance as and when demanded by the driver.

The engine used on the vehicle is a three cylindered 1.2 liter petrol unit and the aluminum piston block used on the engine helps reduce weight. The electric motor runs between 1,500 to 3,500 RPM and produces close to 47 BHP.

The generator mounted crank shaft kicks in when the charge on the battery falls below 30 percent and this helps improve performance. The 414 E is however heavier than the Evora by 377 kg and the vehicle has a top speed of 133 mph when running on combined engines.

The car takes approximately 4.4 seconds to cross the 60 mph mark from 0 mph and the engine is quite refined as compared to the Evora. From the external point of view, the car looks quite similar to the Evora and features Lotus' patent front grille with the air inlet bonnet and the vehicle looks stunningly mean and cute at the same time.

The 414 E is not set to enter production lineup, at least till 2015 and hence if you are looking to buy one, you will have a lot of time to wait and consider the probabilities. However, this is a very promising vehicle of the future.
