Longest and Safest Road Tunnels in the World - Top 10
|   Monday, August 21, 2017
The first tunnels were dug by the Romans to facilitate access to water. Thousands of years later, construction of certain tunnels is a miracle of engineering, facilitating rapid transport over long distances.

Below are the longest and safest tunnels in the world. With lots of observation systems, phones and emergency exits, fire extinguishers, fire sensors and other alarm buttons, they make your trip safe and beautiful.

Laerdal, Norway
Completed in 2000, it is the longest road tunnel in the world with an investment that has exceeded 120 million euros.
The works lasted for 5 years and its total length was 24.51 km. It is equipped with observation systems, emergency telephones and fire extinguishers.

Yamate, Japan
Although works for this tunnel began in 1992, only in 2015 the entire passage was opened to traffic after a first part was opened in 2005. It has a length of 18.2 km.

Zhongnanshan, China
With a length of 18.4 km, it was inaugurated in 2007, and the amount needed to build it was 410 million dollars. It consists of 2 different passages for each direction of travel, so the risk of collision is eliminated.

Jinping, China
This road tunnel is one of the deepest in the world in terms of the rock load above it (and not reported at sea level). Thus, at the maximum load point it reaches 2,375 meters and about three quarters of its total length is under a load of over 1,500 meters of rock. It was inaugurated in 2011 and is 17.54 km long.

St. Gotthard, Switzerland
At the time of its inauguration, it had the title of the longest road tunnel. It maintained this title until 2000 when the Norwegian tunnel was opened for traffic. Every day, approximately 17,000 vehicles are crossing it, and huge queues are formed a few times because of the fact that there is only one lane per direction. It has a length of 16.91 km.

Arlberg, Austria
Built between 1974 and 1978, this tunnel is transited daily by approximately 8,000 vehicles. The total length of the tunnel is 13.97 km and the investment was 300 million euros.

Xishan, China
It has a length of 13 65 km and was inaugurated in 2012. The highway that surrounds Xishan Island is 42 kilometers long and contains both a 14-kilometer tunnel and 33 bridges and nine rest areas (with gas stations and restaurants).

Hongtiguan, China
With a length of 13.12 km, the Hongtiguan tunnel consists of two different passages for each direction and was inaugurated at the end of 2013.

Hsuehshan, Taiwan
Works for this tunnel lasted more than 15 years due to various problems. It was inaugurated in 2006 and has a length of 12.94 km. Thanks to this tunnel, the route's travel time has fallen from 2 hours to 40 minutes.

Fréjus, France-Italy
This tunnel connects France and Italy. Its construction lasted 7 years and the inauguration date was in 1980. Fréjus has one single lane, the maximum speed allowed is 70 km / hour, and traffic is continuously monitored by 220 cameras.
