London Set to Receive Fleet of All Electric Cabs
|   Friday, February 21, 2014
Private British Hire Company Thriev has just revealed their all electric fleet of mini cabs on the streets of London. Close to 20 units of the Chinese built BYD E6 electric cars have been registered with the London Transport Division, to act as private vehicles for hire. They plan on introducing 30 more electric vehicles to their lineup by May and if successful, many more private players could enter this fray.

Arvind Vij, founder of Thriev, claim that he plans on introducing 20 - 30 vehicles to their lineup each month.
He claims that fare on an electric vehicle will be much less than a typical London Cab, which will help this vehicle gain popularity with the masses. Cost of operations is also much less than typical mini cab operators, which will help it in attaining market sustainability.

Even though E6 cabs cannot be registered as a conventional London Cab, owing to turning cycle requirements, Thriev plan on operating close to 50,000 units of their vehicles very soon. Mini cabs nowadays rely mostly on diesel fuel, which is known to cause citywide pollution. The BYD E6 on the other hand is powered by a 40 kWh battery, which should power this vehicle for 180 Miles on a single charge.

The E6 was originally launched as a commercial cab in Hong Kong back in March 2013 and this vehicle is already being used commercially in the Netherlands. This fleet is expected to be powered by a range of high speed turbo chargers, which will be installed in partnership with British Gas. Thriev also plans on tapping into the renewable energy source in the UK, while a complete recharge costs close to 10p, which equals to £5 or £8 for a full day's recharge, equaling 200 Miles.

According to Vij, each battery manages close to 4000 recharges using high speed chargers, which equals to nearly 10 years of lifespan. Zero emission is an important factor in the automotive world right now and Thriev is emphasizing on this vehicle's zero emission policy quite diligently. London's current fleet of 22,000 diesel run cabs is soon expected to be replaced by greener options, as Mayor Boris Johnson plans on introducing range extension designs to combat growing urban pollution.

Nissan's latest NV200 will go on sale by year end and this should act as a potent rival to the E6. We are expecting multiple competitors to enter this lucrative market segment, as it has huge scopes for profit. Nissan will be offering a backup 1.2 liter petrol engines on their NV200, which will come in handy in terms of emergency.

London's first electric cab was launched back in 1987, even though it failed to gain popularity due to aging battery technology in the days. It still sported a fleet of 75 units back in the day. This announcement has been welcomed by people across major strata. Hence, we expect popularity to expand over the years. Stay tuned as we bring you latest details about London's new electric cab fleet.
