Lexus GS F - First Images Of Mercedes E63 AMG and BMW M5 Rival
|   Thursday, January 15, 2015
Lexus will exhibit at the Detroit Auto Show the GS F performance model. This sedan aims to rival the BMW M5 and Mercedes E63 AMG, but what is hidden under the hood seems insufficient.

After Cadillac unveiled the CTS-V model as a weapon to annihilate the famous German competitors such as Mercedes E63 AMG and BMW M5, Lexus came to take a swing at them too. To be able to even crave the crown for the heavyweight segment, Lexus launched the new GS F, a performance version of the GS sedan, modified by the F-Sport Performance division.

As might be expected, the design has become a little more aggressive by using a new front grille, oversized and overloaded, large air intakes and LED lights. Wheel arches have been widened and now come with ventilation slots. The back enjoys a deflector and four chrome tailpipes, and the taillights received a black background and the trunk was equipped with a discreet spoiler. Also, the series rims have been replaced with new ones, from alloy with a size of 19 inches. The front wheels are shod in 255 / 35 R19 tires while the rear uses 275 / 35 R19s.

The sports line goes on the inside too where passengers will be greeted by clamshell seats, upholstered in 2 colors with contrasting stitching and metal inserts.
But what really interests us is under the hood. Here the Japanese have turned to their traditional recipe, a V8 engine displacing 5.0 liters, with an unmistakable sound. This engine is only able to deliver 473 horsepower and a torque of 527 Nm. Because of this, the resources are insufficient for a duel with the more powerful models it aims to beat, the BMW M5 and Mercedes E63 AMG. Also, transmission of resources to the wheels is made with an automatic gearbox with eight reports, with a manual gear rotation option.

To properly use that which the V8 unity offers, Lexus GS F announced that it will be assisted by the Torque Vectoring Differential (TVD) system with 3 driving modes: Standard, Slalom (which improves agility and steering response), and Track (for track driving). All this will contribute to a more precise direction of a sports suspension and a more rigid chassis.

The chassis will have "structural reinforcements and an exclusive suspension package [strut and multi-link] designed to optimize the car's handling capabilities and ride quality", say Autocar's sources.

It weighs 1830 kg, thus making the GS F lighter than the BMW M5 by 115 kg and the Mercedes E63 AMG by 40 kg.
The GS F is the second 4-door model of the Lexus F performance division after in 2008 it created the IS F model.

"You'll see F apply to more models than just RC. What you're seeing from Lexus is not just traditional sedan products, but you're going to see more and more aggressive design, styling and driving dynamics." Jeff Bracken, Lexus General Manager, told Automotive News at the Los Angeles Auto Show back in November.
