Largest Aluminum Supplier Worldwide: New Emission Norms Will Triple Amount Of Aluminum Automakers Will Buy

Novelis, the largest supplier of aluminum rollers for automotive manufacturers, forecasts a tripling of sales by 2020, due to new EU emissions standards. Debnarayan Bhattacharya, Novelis Vice President said that car manufacturers will increasingly use more aluminum for their future models in order to make them lighter and more economical.

Derek Prichett, global vice president of Novelis recycling, announced a five time increase in the use of aluminum in the construction of vehicle bodies by 2020, with projections amounting to 1.
million tons per year just for the automotive industry.

In order for this value to be easier to be balanced, the global production of aluminum in 2005 was 31.9 million tons, making it the world's most popular metal after iron. The latter saw a production of 837.5 million tons that year. Almost all aluminum forms available on the market represent a metal alloy. Metal in its pure form is used only in situations where corrosion resistance and malleability are more important than hardness.

Novelis are suppliers for the Americans at Ford, which marketed a model with an aluminum body, the new generation of F-150. The respective pick-up is the most popular model of the brand in North America, and is a challenge for brand dealers because their servicing requires retrofitting to allow for repairs to be made on the aluminum bodywork and technicians needed specialized training. Thanks to the new bodywork the F-150 promises to never rust, and is lighter and more economical than any other full-size pick-up on the market.

The share of beverage cans, which are less profitable, will fall to 50 percent from about 60 percent.
"The overall pie is growing and still the share of automotive sales will jump," said Bhattacharya, who also acts as the managing director of Novelis parent Hindalco Industries Ltd. "We've started supplying to Ford for their F-150."

Aluminum has a third of the density of steel, but can be more resistant if it gets special treatment. Industry experts say the low density of this material allows the use of a thicker layer, which does not affect the total weight of the respective piece in a negative way, compared with an equivalent piece of steel, because the surface should be three times thicker than the steel equivalent just to be able to reach that weight.

The difference can be rapidly compensated by means of an alloy or by specialized heat treatment of aluminum. Until recently, the popularity of aluminum in automobile construction had many obstacles because vehicle design computer systems were configured for steel and other ferrous materials and engineers needed a new generation of these systems in order to progress in this direction.

Aluminum is the third most abundant element on Earth after oxygen and silicon. The metal represents 8 percent (by weight) of the solid surface of the planet. Until recently, it was used mainly in the automotive industry for the rims production.

1825 is the year in which aluminum in its metal form was produced for the first time (with many impurities), the achievement of Danish Hans Christian Ørsted, although Friedrich Wöhler, his German counterpart, developed a better way for aluminum isolation.
