Land Rover To Present 7 Electric Prototype At Geneva
|   Friday, March 01, 2013
The people from Land Rover continue to be the British champion in innovation and engineering; they will prove that by revealing the top 7 Defender models with electric propulsion at the Geneva Motor Show 2013 (7-17 March 2013). The prototypes retain off-road capabilities but have zero emissions.

"Investing in innovation has always been an important aspect of our business and our engineering teams have worked hard to develop this new technology to provide sustainable engines solutions," said John Edwards, the Land Rover brand director.

The standard diesel engine and transmission from the Defender 110 models were replaced with an electric motor of 70 kW/94 hp and 330 Nm, plus a Li-Ion battery with a capacity of 27 kWh that offers a range of over 80 km. In off-road usage at low speeds, the battery can last up to 8 hours. Recharging can be done with a 7 kW charger in four hours, or using a portable 3 kW charger in 10 hours.

The battery weighs no less than 410 kg and was located in the engine place. This makes the total weight increase 100 kg more compared to the conventional version and value ranges between 2055 to 2162 kg, depending on the body type. All the major components in the electric powertrain - including the battery, inverter and motor - are air-cooled rather than liquid cooled, saving a considerable amount of weight and complexity and adding robustness. Regenerative braking has been optimized to such an extent that using Hill Descent Control, the motor can generate 30kW of electricity.

Because the battery technology can be charged very quickly at a rate of up to twice its capacity of 54kW without reducing battery life, almost all of the regenerated energy can be recovered and stored. Up to 80 percent of the kinetic energy in the vehicle can be recovered in this way, depending on conditions.

Electric vehicles retain the legendary 4WD system of the Defender range and lockable differential. Because the electric motor delivers maximum torque right from the start there is no need for a real gearbox, the transmission having only a single step. A modified version of the "Terrain Response" was also embedded.

Electric vehicles have been developed by The Land Rover after successful testing of the prototype Leopard 1, based also on a Defender. Vehicle capabilities were tested in extreme conditions, demonstrating its off-road capabilities. Among the toughest tests of the electric models there was the towing of a trailer weighing 12 tons along a slope with an inclination of 13 degrees and crossing a ford 800 mm deep.

Anthony Harper, director of research at the Jaguar Land Rover, stated that "the project is basically a laboratory on wheels," its role being to test Land Rover electric vehicles in all sorts of conditions. He believes this offers the company the basis of the technology that will one day be included in series models.

The company has announced that there are no plans to introduce in the series production the electric Defender models; the 7 prototypes will be included in a real-world test program later this year.
