Lamborghini Boss Confirms Release Of Urus In 2017
|   Tuesday, February 04, 2014
Lamborghini, returns after more than two decades in the luxury SUV segment with the mighty Urus. The Lamborghini boss, Stefan Winkelmann confirmed the start of series production in 2017.

"Respecting the order of the current production cycle, we should see the new Urus in early 2017. The luxury SUV market is poised to continue to grow," confessed Winkelmann.

In 1986, Lamborghini enters completely new territory. From the production lines of the plant in Sant'Agata Bolognese, came out the LM002, the first luxury SUV in the history of the Italian manufacturer.
Nicknamed "Rambo Lambo", the exclusive 12-cylinder engine model was produced until 1992 in just 328 units.

Lamborghini has stopped production of the model LM002 because the Italians didn't manage to turn the model into a military vehicle. The carmaker from Sant'Agata Bolognese, presented a prototype of Urus in 2012, when Winkelmann predicted that this model could be sold at least 3,000 units per year.

The design borrows many aesthetic details from the Aventador supercar and the atypical proportions for a tall four-door coupe, betrays the claims of sportiness of the new model. The impressive gauge translates into a width of 1.9 meters and a length of 4.99 meters; the Lamborghini Urus is higher than the BMW X6, with more than 11 cm.

"The SUV segment is almost exclusively sold to the retail customer: it has better price points and better residual value" compared to sedans sold to fleet buyers, as Erich Hauser said, automotive analyst at International Strategy & Investment Group. "In emerging markets, you have a real need for cars with better ground clearance" to handle poorly kept roads."

Urus will be developed on the new MLB platform, the Volkswagen Group designed. The same platform will underpin the future Audi Q7. Lamborghini will use a mix of high-tech lightweight materials like aluminum and carbon fiber to achieve a minimized total mass. Urus will benefit from the future generation of advanced four-wheel drive system with Torsen differential, and will be equipped with a dual-clutch automatic transmission and air suspension with variable ground clearance.

While Lamborghini is reluctant to disclose the engine specifications used by the Urus, the targets specified in the product specification are quite clear: a maximum power of 600 hp, the lowest emissions and best performance in the segment.

Unlike Lamborghini, the Italians from Ferrari do not plan to have any model in this segment. They are not planning any four-door models, preferring to send the customers requesting something like that to the other brands from the Fiat Group's portfolio.

On the U.S. market, the number of SUVs sold represented 30.9 percent of cars sold in 2013, an increase from 2012, according to Autodata estimates. SUVs of all types and sizes have become more popular in 2013 than they were in 2012, with many models recording growth globally and in individual markets. Therefore, even manufacturers like Rolls-Royce have taken into account such models. Postponing the launch of the Urus and EXP 9F could provide an advantage to those from Maserati, which prepared a series version of the Kubang on a modified Jeep Grand Cherokee platform.
