KIA Wants To Become "Green" Leader By 2020 - Several Hybrids And Electric Models Promised
|   Friday, November 27, 2015
The future compact SUV KIA Niro will have a hybrid version with CO2 emissions of just 90 g / km. And this is just the beginning!
The future compact crossover Niro will make its European debut in 2016 (probably in Geneva). Presented as a concept since 2013, the Niro will go into production as a compact SUV located under the Sportage model.

Underlying the new Niro will be most likely the Kia KX3 which is sold in China, although the design will be more Europeanized and inspired from the Sportage and Sorento models.

Only the front and rear will get worked on while the silhouette remains similar to the KX3.
Also, by 2020 the Korean manufacturer will expand the range of hybrids and electric vehicles to 11 models. KIA will invest 10.2 billion dollars in the development of new green vehicles that will help reduce consumption by 25 percent compared with the range of models from 2014.

Demand for electric models and plug-in hybrid would increase in the coming years, and those from KIA want to be leaders in this segment, offering customers the latest technology.

By 2020, the Koreans will launch the first electric vehicle powered by fuel cells, which feed on hydrogen. The engine will be a unit the size of a 2.0 liter petrol engine and the fuel cell package will be 5 percent more efficient and 10 percent more performant, being 15 percent lighter and 15 percent more compact than the current hydrogen cell generation.

With a single tank of hydrogen, the electric model will travel more than 800 km with a top speed of about 170 km / h. Such a vehicle will be produced annually in 1000 copies. In 1998 KIA produced a Mohave FCEV limited series, which with a single tank of hydrogen reached a range of 680 km.
They will not forget conventional units, however. Seven out of ten current petrol and diesel engines will be replaced by new-generation powertrains that will be largely turbo-aspirated.

The ambitious plans of those from KIA will begin to be realized from 2016, when the current KIA Optima will receive two hybrid versions. Yes, you heard right – two versions!

The first will be an ordinary Optima Hybrid version, which will be equipped with the powerful 2.0 liter petrol engine (156 hp) and an electric motor (52 hp), automatic transmission with 6 speeds, and lithium polymer battery pack of 1.62 kWh, making a total of 195 hp, and is 10 percent more efficient compared to the previous Optima Hybrid generation.

The second hybrid will be Optima Plug-in Hybrid (PHEV) with the possibility of charging the 9.8 kWh lithium polymer batteries directly from an ordinary outlet.
Under the hood will be the same 2.0 liter gasoline engine (156 hp) coupled to a 6 speed automatic transmission, but the electric motor will be more powerful - 68 hp.

In pure electric mode the KIA Optima PHEV will cover 43 km. The KIA Optima Hybrid will be available in the first half of 2016, and the Plug-in Hybrid version will debut in the second half.
