KIA To Invest 2 Billion Dollars In Autonomous Vehicle Development
|   Saturday, November 21, 2015
It seems that every auto manufacturer tends to develop an autonomous vehicle that will provide a new level of road safety and a future without accidents. Thus, the Koreans from Kia will enter the game of autonomous vehicles, announcing an investment of 2 billion dollars with they will develop new active safety systems by 2018, the Advanced Driver Assistance System (ADAS) technology that will be the basis for autonomous vehicles.
This investment project will hire more specialists in the field of safety.

ADAS technologies will include new sensors that will detect other vehicles, accident situations and road conditions. The sensors will send information to the electronic "brain" that will take decisions to avoid collisions. In turn, this "brain" will send commands to the vehicle control devices, which will brake swerve or slow down the car in extreme situations.

At this moment, KIA cars have active safety systems, such as lane changing warning system, Lane Departure Warning System (LDWS), Lane Keeping Assist System (LKAS), blind spot warning system Blind Spot Detection (BSD), autonomous emergency braking, Auto emergency braking (AEB), and adaptive cruise-control, Advanced Smart Cruise control (ASCC).

The upcoming systems that are under development include autonomous driving system on the highway, Highway Driving Assist (HDA), which combines the Lane Guidance System (LGS) and Advanced Smart Cruise Control (ASCC) systems. The HDA system will maintain safe distance from the vehicle in front, stay in its lane, maintain maximum legal speed, and realize autonomously overtakes.

Another system that is in the testing stage is the Traffic Jam Assist (TJA) system, which will drive the car very close behind the vehicle in front in a crowded traffic jam. This facility will relieve the driver of the stress that traffic jams create. For even greater comfort, those at Kia developed the Remote Advanced Parking Assist System (RAPAS) that will allow the owner to park the car remotely, standing a few meters from the car.

Last in the list is a new technology introduced with the new generation BMW 7 Series range, so the Koreans are targeting the technological peaks of the German industry too, not just its direct rivals.

These technologies will gradually appear on Kia production models such as the Sorento or Optima, and by 2020, Kia will launch a semi-autonomous car that can travel autonomously in certain situations. More than this, by 2030 the Korean manufacturer wants to launch a fully autonomous car - the real deal that will run by itself and will not require driver involvement! At the moment, the new ADAS systems are tested in the electric model Kia Soul EV.

"Fully-autonomous vehicles are still some way off, and a great deal of research and rigorous product testing will need to be carried out to make the 'self-driving car' a reality. Kia is still in the early stages of developing its own technologies, and we are confident that the latest innovations – both partially and fully autonomous – will ultimately make driving safer for everyone" said Tae-Won Lim, Vice President, Central Advanced Research and Engineering Institute for Hyundai.
