Kia Showcases the Cross GT Concept at the Chicago Motor Show
|   Wednesday, February 13, 2013
Kia plans on developing an SUV for the segment above the current model of the Sorrento. Called the Kia Cross GT, the vehicle was showcased at the Chicago Motor Show recently. The Cross GT is designed on the same platform as the Kia GT showcased in the different motor shows post 2011, however few modifications have been made to the dimensions and the chassis structure.

The concept features a wheelbase measuring 3099 mm which is 399 mm wider than its production counterpart.
The vehicle is also 4897 mm long and that is 213 mm longer than its production series counterpart. However, the roof height has been lowered by 41 mm which makes the car reduce body roll and provides increased stability. This is the basic principle devised by cross over makers and most of these vehicles tend to be shorter than their concept models or production lineup SUVs.

The Cross GT Hybrid is powered by a petrol powered 3.8 liter V6 powerhouse along with an electric motor. Both motors combine to produce 400 BHP along with 500 ft lb of torque. The power generated, is split to the entire number of wheels equally by means of the eight speed automatic transmission system. Kia claims that the electric motor has a range of 21 miles when running on electricity only.

The cabin is cozy but airy and accommodates four adults with ease. The multi panel skylight makes the interior roomy and fresh along with the hexagonal glass panels which illuminates the cabin. The back bucketed seats feature easy entry and exit due to the presence of the dual suicide doors which can be used by one and all despite the age criterion.

The boot also features the traditional tail gate and glass hatch. Although the Kia Cross GT is purely a concept crossover, it highlights Kia's potential in the market and the viability of designing a future hybrid power train based crossover vehicle. When the Cross GT Concept was launched in 2011, the designing team received great accolades for the creation as the vehicle sported a new line of exterior dynamics.

The newer model does a better job and the minor modifications improve the ride quality. Kia had hopes of designing a complete cross over with a hybrid drive train one day and if the Cross GT Concept is brought out to the production lines, the company could have their very first dream come true. The vehicle balances performance with luxury and that is the best aspect about the Kia Cross GT.

The Kia GT was designed in Frankfurt but the Cross GT was designed at the KDCA Design Center in Irvine, California by the Kia designing team. The Cross GT is not based on the American market as Kia was more focused on the Russian and Chinese markets at the time. These are the two most productive markets for the SUV and crossover industry and Kia plans on capturing these markets with a new line of products designed especially for their needs.
