Kia Optima T-Hybrid Concept Sees New Diesel-Electric Hybrid System
|   Saturday, October 11, 2014
Kia presents in Paris a new version of the Optima Hybrid. It combines a diesel engine with an advanced hybrid system, still under development, to provide a declared combined fuel consumption of 4.2 liters per 100 km.

The Kia Optima T-Hybrid is a near production concept that debuts in the Korean brand's stand at the Paris Motor Show. It is classified as a mild hybrid which means that the electric motor cannot propel the car alone, except for low speeds.

The 15 hp electric motor is used to assist a CRDi turbodiesel unit displacing 1.7 liters that delivers 170 hp and 380 Nm of torque. Among the technological novelties it brings, the new hybrid model not yet confirmed for series production includes electrical a 48 V lead-carbon battery system dedicated to the hybrid system and the electric turbine attached to conventional engine, the latter being responsible for a significant increase in the level of power provided. These technical solutions are not new in the industry, being implemented by the Audi RS 5 TDI concept.

Kia representatives say that the Optima T-Hybrid model is still under development but that the new hybrid system used by this model increases the power by 15 - 20 percent compared with the standard one, totaling 170 hp just for the internal combustion unit, and provides a significant reduction in fuel consumption and CO2 emissions.

The official estimates of announces 4.2 liters per 100 km combined consumption and CO2 emissions below 99 grams per kilometer.
The Start-Stop system uses a new type of electromotor driven by an accessory belt which replaces the classic alternator and make a faster and quieter start. The internal combustion unit is assisted by the electrical turbine, which generates an additional supply of power and torque at low engine revs at which the conventional turbocharger would not be able to provide these features.

The Kia Optima T-Hybrid can be driven in 100 percent electric mode at low speeds and the dedicated battery pack of the hybrid system is charged when the driver takes his foot off the accelerator pedal. The Koreans preferred a lead-carbon battery instead of the lithium-ion system, because it does not require active cooling and can be recycled much more easily when it is replaced and removed from use.

Kia first previewed all the technology at the Geneva motor show earlier this year, saying the system would be offered in both gasoline and diesel-powered models "in the near future" to help lower CO2 emissions while also raising power.

The Koreans Hybrid accelerates from 0 to 100 km / h in the 9.0 seconds and can reach a top speed of 220 km / h. The Kia Optima T- Hybrid has a six-speed manual transmission and is one of the few hybrid models in the world equipped with a manual transmission.

Kia Europe chief Michael Cole said: "The new mild hybrid system is our flagship technology for improving the efficiency of our internal combustion-powered models. In future, technology such as this will help Kia further reduce fleet emissions in Europe."
