|   Friday, March 07, 2014
Jeep Renegade is the surprise the Americans brought for the Geneva Motor Show, the model being exposed in its series version. The result is the smallest model offered by the Americans, which brings an interesting design with touches taken from the concept with the same name, but exposed at the 2008 Auto Show in Detroit.

The 2008 edition of the Detroit Auto Show brought to light a design study, Jeep Renegade. This study presented a diesel-electric hybrid SUV, equipped with two electric motors and a diesel engine.
It was interesting at the time, but how have things changed since then?

We note similarities in the optical blocks, both front and the rear, along with the front grid format, and overall silhouette of the interior. For the design study presented in 2008, to the series model of 2014, many features have changed. Thus, the initial concept was an SUV without the roof, while the series model is part of the B segment, and is offered in a version with retractable ceiling too.

The Renegade aims to be a capable off-road model with four driving modes (Auto, Snow, Sport and Sand / Mud). Off-road capabilities depend on the version chosen by the clients as there are several possibilities in this direction.

Ground clearance stands at 220 mm. Also depending on the version chosen by the client, the Jeep Renegade has about 70 electronic assistance systems from ABS and ESP, to systems assisting in ascending and descending ramps.

The Renegade has a 101.2-inch wheelbase. From this point of view it is identical to the Kia Soul, but the Jeep is 3.6 inches (9.14 cm) longer and 3.5 inches (8.89 cm) taller. It is also higher than the Nissan Juke in almost every dimension. In the cabin, there's 118.6 cubic feet (3 358.38 liters) of interior volume, according to the EPA, which is more than any of the competitors.

Diesel fans will get the entry-level range 1.6 Multijet II rated at 118 hp and 320 Nm, followed by a more powerful version, the 2.0 Multijet II developing 167 hp and 350 Nm.

Gasoline units provide between 108 and 168 hp. The basic version is called the 1.6 E. TorQ and develops 108 hp plus 152 Nm. The second engine is a 1.4 MultiAir 2 with Start-Stop, which offers 138 hp and 230 Nm. The flagship is a 1.4-liter MultiAir 2 Turbo rated at 168 hp and 250 Nm.

The new Jeep Renegade will be produced at Fiat in Melfi, Italy. The subcompact SUV of the American brand is the first in its segment to be optionally provided with a nine-speed automatic transmission. As standard, it has a six-speed manual transmission offered together with four-cylinder engines made by Fiat Powertrain Technologies.

Mike Manley, President and CEO, Jeep Brand, Chrysler Group, said that "The all-new 2015 Jeep Renegade expands the brand's product portfolio and targets the rapidly expanding small SUV segment around the globe with benchmark levels of efficiency and driving dynamics, while at the same time delivering best-in-class 4x4 capability that customers expect from Jeep. Renegade symbolizes the brand's renowned American design, ingenuity and innovation, marking the Jeep brand's first entry into the small SUV segment in more than 100 markets around the globe."
