Japanese Brands Leading The Reliability Ranking once More
|   Wednesday, November 06, 2013
Like every year, the Consumer Reports 2013 reliability ranking was strictly a Japanese affair. The first three positions of the study made by the independent organization from the United States were occupied, in order, by Lexus, Toyota and Acura.

The study is based on data provided by the owners of the models evaluated, the quantified information through complex questionnaires that reveal the number of defects reported, and hence the performance of each brand in terms of reliability.
To be included in the annual ranking, a brand must have at least two eligible models tested by Consumer Reports and a minimum of 1,000 valid questionnaires for each of them.

The Consumer Reports takes into account the data provided only for newer cars in the last three years, the reliability study covering thus only the newest models on the market. In total, more than 4 million Americans have received questionnaires in a classic format, and 3.2 million in digital format. Information about approximately 400,000 cars was included in the database this year.

Finally, eight Japanese brands have managed to rank in the top 10 of estimated reliability of the 2013 Consumer Reports study. We are talking about Lexus, Toyota, Acura, Mazda, Infiniti, Honda, Subaru and Scion. Among the European brands, the best position is occupied by Audi, who got fourth place, up four positions from the previous year.

The second highest ranked European brand is Volvo, evaluated with only three models which had the largest increase over the previous year: 13 positions. Mercedes-Benz was ranked third in the ranking top of European brands, but it obtained only the 13th place in the American top. The Stuttgart brand was followed by Porsche, BMW, Kia and Chevrolet.
