Jaguar XK Retires This Summer - The XJ Coupe Will Take Its Place And Rival The Mercedes S-Class Coupe
|   Wednesday, April 02, 2014
Although it will no longer produce the current XK from this summer, Jaguar is in no hurry to give birth to a successor model. Replacement of the current model will arrive in only 2017, and will actually be a coupe version of the XJ sedan. Its mission: to steal customers from the Mercedes S-Class Coupe.

Probably inspired by the launch of the new Mercedes S-Class Coupe at the Motor Show in Geneva, and the popularity it enjoyed the British from Jaguar promise a competitor on the same level.

The United Kingdom manufacturer has already announced it will give up the current XK this summer, but its place will not be taken by the new F-Type, as we expected. Jaguar has other plans involving the next generation XJ sedan, as already mentioned. The model will give rise to a coupe variant, like the new Mercedes S-Class Coupe. Its mission will be to steal customers from the Stuttgart rival, but also from the exclusivist Bentley Continental GT.

So, the successor to the current XK will not be produced, its place in the range will be substituted for a future three-door Jaguar XJ. With this decision, the British will have the opportunity to revive an older model, emblematic of the brand's history: the old XJS.

To ensure that the future model will be enjoying success, Jaguar will use the aesthetic recipe of the current F-Type, although slightly adapted. The engine range will include new V6 engine, displacing 3.0 liters and running on petrol and a V8 engine of 500 horsepower.

However, launching an XJ Coupe will be postponed until 2017. Jaguar has plans to launch a mid-size sedan by 2015 called XE, which constitutes a strong rival to the BMW Series 3. The coupe and convertible variants will arrive in 2016, with the Jaguar SUV and the new XF generation.

Jaguar XK sales was approximately 1,000 units in the last three months of 2012. But in the last three months of 2013, following the launch of F type, sales decreased significantly. The release of the F type actually put down the XK mode, on which it is loosely based and that in spite of substantially different prices and positioning of the two models.

The launch of the F type eliminates the need for the XK to act as a sports coupe and luxury GT. That is why the model F type became the dedicated Jaguar sports car. Consequently, the XK model had to focus on its luxury GT credentials.

Right now the rumor market is buzzing with activity and it seems that the replacement will be quite different from the current model.
At the end of 2012, design director Ian Callum marked some hints that this decision was coming when he said they are "going through a lot of discussion" on the matter of how the XK should evolve.
