Jaguar Revives Classic XKSS Production

The Jaguar Land Rover Classic division's reputation has already reached legendary proportions among classic car collectors. This is due to the fact that in 2014 six copies E-Type Lightweight were made, after the original design specifications. This year, Jaguar Land Rover Classic has announced that it will produce nine XKSS models replicating every detail of the famous sports car from 1957.

XKSS is one of the most iconic cars in Jaguar history and is considered the first series supercar, because it was the road version of the legendary D-Type that won the famous Le Mans race.
In 1957 a fire broke out at Jaguar's Browns Lane factory and burned 9 XKSS models, which were destined for the North American market.

Therefore, the total number of XKSS models made of Jaguar was only 16 units. But Jaguar Land Rover Classic division will produce from scratch the 9 units lost in fire - each copy will have a cost starting at 1 million pounds.
With the occasion of the Los Angeles Auto Show, Jaguar exhibited an exemplary green Sherwood, which will be the benchmark for the construction of 9 cars scheduled for delivery to customers in 2017.

To create this prototype, Jaguar allocated 18 months of research and scanned several versions of the XKSS originals from 1957. Scanning was extremely meticulous, so that the British manufacturer acquired accurate digital images of each part of the car, from the bodywork panels and chassis, up to the last screw or rivet. Moreover, over 2,000 rivets are being used in the construction of this historic car, just as they were used for the original model.

The bodywork panels are made of a magnesium alloy, identical to that used to XKSS in 1957. And because there are no molds from that time for this model, Jaguar has created some new ones. To top that off, the panels will be modeled using a handmade technique, just like they did 60 years ago.

The digital images were helpful for Reynolds, the chassis manufacturer, which will carry out making the new chassis. Also, Jaguar requested that when building the chassis frames they use the imperial system for counting, not the metric one. In addition, the frames are bronze welded just like the XKSS of 1957 were.

The engine, an in-line six-cylinder with a 3.4-liter displacement, is a D-Type model. It has three carburetors, Weber DC03 and the engine block and cylinder heads are cast. The engine power too is impressive: 262 hp.
The Dunlop brake discs are like those used during the '50s, and use Plessey pumps. The tires are all Dunlop, with rims shod from two pieces, riveted and manufacture from magnesium alloy.

It is estimated that no less than 10,000 hours of work done by hand will be devoted to building each of the 9 new Jaguar XKSS models. Attention to detail will be perceptible in the cockpit too. The dashboard will incorporate Smiths watches, with the bronze buttons and wood steering wheel will be identical to the model in '57.

Jaguar made a single concession with regards to the original specifications. For improved safety, the fuel tank is made of more resistant modern materials, compatible with contemporary fuels. This does nothing but increase the confidence that one can enjoy the car without worry.
