Jaguar launches the 2013 XJ-R and XK-R
|   Wednesday, December 05, 2012
Jaguar is planning an all wheel drive platform for the upcoming XJ and XK Class of vehicles. Although America has 80 percent all wheel drive vehicles and the UK has approximately 70 percent of all wheel drive, Jaguar till not had no all wheel drive vehicles or option on its vehicles and this is all set to change.

However, Jaguar will unveil the all wheel drive models only for the American and the Canadian market fall 2013, the United Kingdom will still have to be content with the rear wheel driven Jaguars.
This drive train and platform development is in sync with the introduction of the 3.0 liter super charged V6 petrol engine that will exclusively be used on the XJ and XK Series.

The new drive train feature has been based on Land Rover's innovative technology and the XJ was basically tested by an expert team from land Rover before it was cleared for production. The changes in the XJ and the XK Series vehicles include a new exhaust system, steering rack, front knuckles, engine mounts, front and rear differentials, acoustic heat shield, cross members and the induction of an all new under tray. These features distinguish the 2013 model from its predecessor.

While the vehicles in the XJ series will be tuned extensively, the XK series will receive comparatively lesser modifications to its power train. The XJ sports a powerful V6 engine controlled by an electronically assisted steering system, dampers and suspension bushes. The drive train has been designed extensively, keeping in mind the need for induction of a sump drive shaft. The engine is mated to an eight speed manual transmission system with split the produced torque at 100 / 0, front / rear or in any combination in between the extremes.

The wheel base of the XJ has been increased and this gives the driver better grip and confidence to attack the asphalt. An increase in the size of the rear wheel is a blessing on the XJ and the vehicle is even capable of gliding over treacherous road conditions, however going off road is strictly prohibited. The engine refinement on both the XK and XJ is typically Jaguar and the engine responsiveness and throttle smoothness is beyond questioning. The vehicles come in a combination of drive mode such as Dynamic or Normal and this alters the traction and throttle production, depending on the terrain.

These cars are quite efficient over snow as well and Jaguar has done a good job with the electronic stability control and driving assist systems. Both are perfectly synchronized and as a result the driver gets a confidence boost every time the vehicle stays on road even in tricky conditions.

Some of the other essential features installed in the vehicles are quick lane change indicators and hill start assist. However, its unavailability in the UK is a shame and although Jaguar has promised all wheel drive in the future, as of now the people will have to be content with the rear wheel drive versions of the 2013 XK and XJ Series.
