Jaguar Land Rover Designs an Electric version of the Defender
|   Tuesday, March 05, 2013
Land Rover has designed an electric version of the Defender which will be on display at the Geneva Motor Show this month. The vehicle has been introduced keeping in mind the zero emission policy and could be a commendable vehicle when it comes to the off road ability that the Defender is famous for. The engine on the Defender features an additional 95 BHP displacing electric motor displacing 243 ft lb of torque.

While the electric engine draws power from a 300 volt lithium ion battery weighing 410 kg.
Most of the components in the engine are air cooled and this reduces the overall weight of the car by 100 kg. The actual weight of the Defender is 2055 kg and this has been reduced from 2162 kg. Weight also depends on the body style of the Defender and Jaguar Land Rover claims an increased range of 50 miles.

The Defender is used mostly off road and hence this keeps the overall speed of the vehicle down below its top speed. The battery needs to be charged for eight hours at a stretch and Land Rover says that for 100 percent recharge, the battery needs to be in place for 10 hours at a stretch. A portable charged can however charge the battery for minimum usage in four hours.

The Defender is also charged whilst regenerative braking and a single speed transmission system has been integrated to the Defender's all-wheel drive platform and the Terrain response System. Jaguar Land Rover has installed a list of technologies into the heart of the Defender and these aims to improve the overall drive dynamics of the vehicle.

Advanced Hill Descent Control has been used in the vehicle and the vehicle is charged up to 30 kW due to regenerative braking. Jaguar Land Rover claims that up to 80 percent of the static energy of the Defender can be converted and used this way. The Defender is capable if travelling through 800 mm of water and is capable of towing loads of up to 12 tons up a gradient measuring 13 percent.

Despite the positive aspects of the vehicle, Jaguar Land Rover has no immediate plans of designing a production version of the electric Defender. The electric Defender will be put on road tests later this year and Jaguar Land Rover plans on showcasing the vehicle at the Geneva Motor Show this month. The Defender has always been a potent vehicle in the Land Rover lineup and an electric version of the vehicle would be easy on the pockets as well as reduce CO2 emission.

Jaguar Land Rover could come up with such a production model quite soon and customers are already looking forward to viewing the vehicle at the Geneva Motor Show. If the hype is sufficient, Jaguar Land Rover could consider bringing this model to production. However, that is a farfetched theory. As of now, Jaguar Land Rover is busy with a long list of vehicles up for production and there is no immediate need for a new vehicle to be conceived.
