Jaguar Land Rover Announces Replacement Model for their Freelander
|   Monday, March 03, 2014
The replacement vehicle for Land Rover's Freelander has just been spotted during winter tests, ahead of a formal launch this year. Land Rover has extensive plans for this vehicle, as they plans on introducing it as an extended wheel base vehicle, based on their Discovery family. This yet to be named vehicle could sport a Discovery nameplate, as and when launched, although officials say it is premature to comment.

Officials have however confirmed both five and seven seated variants of this vehicle for the first time, as leaked images of a larger seven seated SUV proved its presence lurking around.
Even though most of its exterior structure is undercover, its rear light cluster design is evidently new, as minor changes have been noticed despite the camouflage. The new vehicles will draw power from an all new engine lineup.

These Hotfire four cylinder engines are claimed to be highly fuel efficient as well as powerful, even though much is yet to be known. Land Rover is currently manufacturing this engine lineup at their plant near Wolverhampton, although it could be manufactured at other plants soon, depending on sales and demand.

Official figures claim that the Hotfire engine is capable of displacing 119 g/km of CO2, even as fuel efficiency is not recorded. Land Rover however plans on introducing a range of engine options – both petrol and diesel – within next year The Freelander is one of Land Rover's flagship model. Hence, the decision to replace it with a baby Discovery is quite bold.

Even the slightest mistake could drop down sales by a big margin, affecting the company's steady growth since the past half decade. The current generation Freelander 2 was launched back in 2006, while Land Rover promised a facelift for 2013. It is time to live up to the expectations of the potential customers and Jaguar Land Rover fans, as it has a direct impact on sales.

The latest vehicle is based on the LR-MS platform, which is currently used underneath the Range Rover Evoque. Ford's EUCD has played a major part in developing this platform, while official word claims that close to 90 percent of the parts used are original and new. We expect the baby Discovery's wheelbase to be 150 mm longer than its current generation cousin. This hints at fairly large amounts of space on its interior.

Land Rover is an expert when it comes to mixing materials to get the finesse required. Hence, we expect a premium fit and finish quality on this vehicle. Aluminum, parts of carbon fiber and high tensile steel has been used extensively, while bonnet and roof structures were made out of aluminum only.

Tailgate and front wings are however likely to be made out of composite structures, even as official word is yet to arrive. Overall, this is a fairly strong structure, while this vehicle is capable of handling a lot more than just asphalt. Land Rover is built for style, refinement and the pure pleasure of driving off road. Make use of this opportunity.
