Italy gets to see BMW Zagato Coupe

The stunning Zagato Coupe of BMW has been revealed at the Villa D'Este Concours in Italy. It is a hand built machine for the streets. While many car enthusiasts may be focusing their attention at Monte Carlo for the heritage rich exhibition of cars, BMW has created a stir at the Concorso d'Eleganza Villa D'Este on the banks of Lake Como in Italy by unveiling the beautiful new Zagato Coupe.

It is a one-off concept car which has been handmade and it carries design styles of the coach builder, Zagato.
The most striking cue is at the glass trunk lid at the rear of the concept car. The sophisticated twin dome roof of the car is another hallmark stamp of Zagato which was last noticed on the Aston Martin V-12 Zagato. This Aston Martin car won the Villa D'Este Concours the previous year. After the exhibition, Aston Martin Zagato went into production.

The BMW Zagato Coupe brings back the memories of the olden days of the coach-built racing cars. This has also brought the fusion of German and Italian design combination closer. This tailor-made car features the coachwork in Italian style that is reminiscent of the race cars of the nineteen thirties and the Mille Miglia. The body of the Zagato Coupe is handmade entirely. The Zagato engineers have crafted its contours out of sheet metal made of aluminium and then moulded it flank-wise. The idea was based on a ‘Vmax' concept to make it into an aerodynamic and optimized roadworthy car.

Some changes which have been made obvious from the standard BMW models are the editions of the huge cooling ducts on the bonnet and the front and rear bumpers which have been redesigned with the new twin exhaust tips. Also noteworthy are the designs of the alloy wheels.
The Zagato Coupe is based on the BMW Z4 Coupe sDrive 35i with a 3.0-liter engine giving an output of 306 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque. The performance specifications include a top speed of 155 mph and a 0-62 mph race time of 5.1 seconds. The pistons are arranged in a straight line.

As a reason of the base which has been copied from Z4, the Zagato Coupe has got a classic face look. The look has been designed from a single mould with the rear bumper blending into a long diffuser. The body is placed on nineteen-inch wheels. The special paint work has been done by Rosso Vivace. The interior is done in shades of grey leather with stitching in decorative red. The ‘Z' logos have been embroidered into the seats. The mini ‘z' letters have also been worked into the kidney grille mesh. There are even two bags in the interior; one is for the luggage and the other is for your hat.

The Concorso D'Eleganza Villa D'Este began on 25th May, three days ago, in Italy. All manufacturers are after such exhibitions to launch their production models and concepts too. BMW is one of the sponsors of Villa D'Este and it has found a good response to the revitalization of the coach building concept. The statement of the design has given more diversity to its style. Such concepts are not unheard of as elite buyers in the past have not held themselves back to get a unique design done out of the chassis of their cars. Coach builders like the Zagato Company have the backing of many car manufacturers.

The Zagato Coupe has met all the crash tests posed by the authorities worldwide. Zagato engineers have left their mark on the long hood and the front face look. Zagato had to work with several constraints like a platform that was pre-existing right down to issues covering the standards of pedestrian safety.
