Is the Toyota Scion TC really a sports car?
|   Wednesday, March 20, 2013
There have been a lot of arguments between what a sports car is and what a super car is. The arguments still persist. But what needs to be made clear now is the difference between a car and a sports car. Not every car can be termed as a sports car. There are certain parameters and barriers that need to be cleared by a car to become a sports car.

The Scion TC is just a mere successor to the Toyota Celica that ruled the roads in the early nineties.
The Celica was a fierce machine engineered to win championships for the company. The performance of the car was never under scrutiny.

The car won many championships and became the face of the group B cars. The car was soon out of the market after achieving what it had to achieve. Soon there will be many more to follow as the parameters keep growing in the championships with time.

When the TC came to the front the car was not as successful the car was heavier and had a lot less power. It can be called a sporty car but not a sports car. The sports compact cars were never a powerhouse but they maintained a weight balance ratio. This car seems to lack that stability as well. The latest parameter for a sports car is the performance level of the Ford Mustang V6.

The Mustang has a 305 horsepower engine that produces 178.3 horsepower per ton but the TC produces only a mere 113.9 horsepower per ton. This is a lot less than the Celica used to produce. The weight is also more than the Celica. This is closest to the Toyota Prius that produces 88.1 horsepower per ton. Hence this cannot be called a sports car.

The Scion is now collaborating with the FR-S. This has been done because the TC is now becoming obsolete. So without new addition to the car the car cannot be called a sports car. Even with these additions the horsepower was not enough to be called a sports car.

This was not the best of upgrades for the car. Had a lot more to be done with this car to take it to the higher level. The kit was finally removed and the Scion remained a failure for the company. This car was not a speed monster. There were better cars in its class. The Scion simply failed to be the perfect successor to the ever successful Celica.

The failure of the car is not that most dissatisfying either. It simply shows the company's thirst to produce cars for the younger generation. The young people these days no longer think like before. There were days when horsepower was the major criteria behind likes a car. These days the major criteria behind liking the car has become the gadgetry aspects of the car. Hence we can verdict that the Scion is not a sports car.
