Introducing The Quant e-Sportlimousine, The Vehicle That Might Revolutionize The Electric Car
|   Friday, December 05, 2014
It is very likely you have not heard of NanoFlowcell. Although it seems to be the name of an electric car powered by hydrogen, we are talking about the name of a company based in Liechtenstein. Next let's look at the car it proposes.

The official name of the prototype is Quant e-Sportlimousine and is exceptional both in design and the solutions to propulsion and energy storage it proposes. Standing 5.25 meters long, 2.2 meters wide and 1.35 meters high, including nice 22-inch wheels, the prototype is longer than an S-Class with increased wheelbase and comes with flowing lines resembling those of individual transporters imagined by science fiction movies directors.
The difference is that this prototype is by no means SF, even if it uses a propulsion system that can be considered two steps ahead of those existing in the automotive world today.

The most interesting thing about this is that NanoFlowcell company's engineers have turned to the latest news in nanotechnology, the branch that deals with the study and development of special materials that occurs at the microscopic level in order to modify cellular structures and connections.

The technical solution chosen is complex and based on the so-called "Flow Batteries" (a combination of normal batteries and hydrogen cells in which energy is not stored by an electrode, as in a conventional battery, but an electrolyte liquid in a more complex system). Not many details were given in the company's first official press release.

According to Green Car Congress, "Flow cells or flow batteries combine aspects of an electrochemical battery cell with those of a fuel cell. The electrolytic fluids in flow cells—usually metallic salts in aqueous solution (salt water)—are pumped from tanks through the cell. This forms a kind of battery cell with a cross-flow of electrolyte liquid."

The car is based on four electric motors, one at each wheel, which develop 925 horsepower in total and 2900 Nm on each engine allegedly. In terms of performance, we are talking about a drive solution which has the ability to propel the car in 2.8 seconds from 0 to 100 km / h and have a maximum speed of 380 km / h. Aided by two tanks of liquid electrolyte the Quant e-Sportlimousine has a range between 400 and 600 kilometers.

According to company officials from Liechtenstein, the concept was developed in a lab in Zurich, and the first prototypes that will run on the streets will see the light of day by the end of this year. For a production model based on them we will have to wait until 2015.

"For the first time an automobile featuring flow-cell electric drive will appear on Germany's roads," stated chief technical officer at NanoFlowcell, Nunzio La Vecchia. "We are extremely proud that as a small company we have developed such visionary technology and are now able to put it into practice. But this is only the beginning of our journey of discovery."

This new technology has potential uses in other areas, says NanoFlowcell spokesman Prof. Jens-Peter Ellermann, "The potential of the NanoFlowcell is much greater, especially in terms of domestic energy supplies as well as in maritime, rail and aviation technology. The NanoFlowcell offers a wide range of applications as a sustainable, low cost and environmentally-friendly source of energy."
