Introducing Renault KWID, The French Brand's First Mini SUV
|   Saturday, June 13, 2015
Renault is consolidating its position in the Indian market by launching KWID, a mini crossover class at an extremely low price, equivalent to 4,000-5,000 euro.
Developed on the CMF-A platform (Renault-Nissan equivalent for the MQB platform used by Volkswagen but on a different scale), and named after the concept presented in 2014 at New Delhi, the KWID is a model designed especially for emerging markets, where the acquisition price is the determining factor.

KWID is a crucial model because it is the first vehicle launched on the new CMF-A platform belonging to the Renault-Nissan alliance - a highly flexible modular platform made of five modules: the engine, cockpit, Electrical/electronic architecture, front axle, rear axle.

In terms of design, Renault said about KWID that it would represent the "exploration" phase of the five stages identified by the company's design director, Laurens van den Acker. The robust appearance, with short overhangs and vertical straight lines, confirm this statement while the 18-cm ground clearance and plastic panels that protect the body give the KWID a clear crossover aspect.

As far as propulsion goes, Renault speaks only about one motor for the KWID, a small petrol unit which will provide excellent fuel consumption figures. Also, the KWID will receive a new manual gearbox, with five-speed.

According to Renault, the KWID model comes for the first time for its segment with facilities like the navigation system with a 7-inch touch screen similar to the Sandero/Logan/Lodgy, floating console with shiny black finish and chrome edge, digital instruments, or Bluetooth connectivity. Also, Renault praises the roomy trunk which offers the largest storage space in the class.

Renault has confirmed that it will not sell the KWID in Europe, which means we could see a similar model sold under Dacia's name. It's not hard to imagine a KWID with a Dacia logo on the radiator grille, the car seemed to have been drawn with that thought in mind from the start.

All of the style elements, as well as the cheap solution with valves instead of exterior door handles, are more representative for the Dacia brand than for Renault.
Dacia has consorted in the past two years with the idea of building a mini-class model. Renault's engineers are able to build a mini-class model but it is very hard to offer a price significantly lower than the Sandero, which already has a very competitive price.

Therefore, the idea of a mini crossover was more feasible for two reasons: crossovers are trendy and secondly, they can ask a higher price but at the same time are small enough to fit under the current Sandero Stepway, which starts with a price tag clearly higher than the Sandero.

With a length of only 3.68 meters and a width of 1.58 meters, the KWID is 38 cm shorter than the Sandero, which has a dimension comparable to the Suzuki Ignis and VW Taigun concept. Therefore, for Europe at least, there is no danger of cannibalization.
