Information Rich Five Decades of McLaren
|   Saturday, February 09, 2013
McLaren completes five decades of existence this year. The company was originally founded in 1963 by Bruce McLaren to enable him to participate in the Australian Tasman Series. The company initially started working out of a garage in South London and grew up to be an established car making firm of today. By the end of 1966 the team had already won the year's Formula One Championship.

The first race of the season took place at the track in Monaco but McLaren's car started facing mechanical problems at the very beginning.
McLaren went on to win two more seasons at the same track in the future. The team was slowly beginning to pull itself together when tragedy struck. Teddy Mayer, the team's Co founder was killed in a Pro Am testing. However, McLaren did not stop winning races despite the odds.

In 1976, the first heat of competition began to emancipate between McLaren and Ferrari, which continues till date. Despite McLaren's best efforts, the team was inconsistent during the 1980s. However, things started looking better when McLaren became the pioneers to introduce composite structures in Formula One in 1984. The vehicle was powered by a Porsche built turbo charged V6 engine and helped McLaren win many events within 1985 –86.

A new partnership with Honda seemed to be helping McLaren build up reputation and team driver Prost was joined by Ayrton Senna in 1988. This was considered to be the Golden Era for McLaren as the constructers were able to win 15 out of their 16 events that year. Senna managed to overtake Prost to emerge as the number one driver for McLaren and added the number one crown to the team's history in 1990 – 91, apart from the one obtained in 1988.

McLaren collaborated with Mercedes in 1995 and the following world championships were won by the Lewis Hamilton / Mika Hakkinen duo. However, the partnership broke in 2008 and McLaren moved on into constructing new vehicles for different types if motor sports. In 1993, McLaren designed a new and innovative Formula One race car design and this was more than just a track car. It was close to what people now call super cars.

The vehicle was designed on a monocoque chassis, was rear engine and the body was constructed mostly of carbon fiber. These are the traits that modern vehicles feature and the origin can be attributed to McLaren. The car attained a new world record for posting a top speed of 242.95 MPH on road.

The vehicle had four turbo chargers installed and displaced a massive 363 BHP. Even today the McLaren F1 is the fastest logically aspirated vehicle. McLaren however did not design a succeeding vehicle till 2003. The McLaren Mercedes SLR was launched to create a breakthrough in this field. This vehicle is iconic and remains that way till today. It brought the best features of track racing and combined them on a road going vehicle. This was the time when McLaren truly started designing modern day super cars.
