Infiniti Combined 1940s Racing Car with Nissan LEAF's New Engine

At this year's Pebble Beach elegance competition, Infiniti Prototype 9 concept proposes a question with an answer that rewrite history in a seductive way: what would it have been like if Infiniti had created a Grand Prix car in the 1940s?

Alfonso Albaisa, Infiniti design department Senior Vice President, tells how this idea was intertwined first as a simple discussion. Albaisa and a limited number of creative team have imagined what it would have looked to have a racing car at that time on the Tamagawa Speedway circuit in Japan.

Interest in this idea grew exponentially as soon as Alfonso Albaisa made the first sketches of the race car, which includes both styling cues inspired by aircraft 70-80 years ago, and design details of current Infiniti aesthetics.

For example, the current Infiniti front grille is naturally integrated into the retro look of the Prototype 9 concept. In fact, the designers wanted the car to look like it was a real monopost in the 1940s, which was hidden somewhere in a barn until today. And the final design perfectly reflects this intention.

Infiniti Prototype 9 is truly a project born out of passion. Alfonso Albaisa and his team worked on mock-ups outside the program hours. Gradually engineers and specialists from other departments of Infiniti learned about the project and wanted to participate, working on Prototype 9 in their spare time. A crucial step in achieving this project was when the production department found out about it.

Engineers immediately wanted to help in building the car. Thus, the project was secretly moved from the headquarters of the design department and taken to the Nissan Research Center near Yokohama.

The interior design team has also been involved with the finest materials and opting for a fixed central hub steering wheel.
The concept's charisma inspired Nissan's engine department. Unlike the nostalgic aesthetics, it was decided that the propulsion would be avant-garde. More specifically, a 100 percent electric propulsion, with a 30 kWh battery, and a prototype of an electric motor which is not seen in the Infiniti series models, was implemented.

The propulsion delivers 148 hp and 320 Nm of torque, the engine is coupled to a one-stage transmission and the traction is only on the rear axle. Infiniti Prototype 9 weighs just 890 kg, sprints from 0 to 100 km / h in 5.5 seconds and reaches a maximum speed of 170 km / h. And the manufacturer promises that in intensive run on the circuit, the battery provides 20 minutes of autonomy.

Infiniti is Nissan's luxury brand, and has been selling cars since 1989, so it cannot boast with his own page in the history book of the classic grand prix. But Prototype 9 manages to give a vision of the past and to create real nostalgia through its simple beauty.
And at Pebble Beach, Infiniti Proptype 9 was not be a forced presence in the context.

Along with this concept the Prince R380, which established in 1965 a number of speed records, and in 1966 won the Grand Prix of Japan at the Fuji Speedway, was presented.

Prince Motor Company is considered the first Japanese luxury brand in the automotive industry and has become part of Nissan. Thus, in the desire to have older historical roots, Infiniti does not hesitate to point out that it is a continuation of the legend written by Prince Motor Company.
