Infiniti And Daimler To Develop A New Common Platform
|   Sunday, January 19, 2014
Infiniti, the luxury division of Japanese automaker Nissan, will develop from scratch with Daimler, their new technology partner, a common platform dedicated to a range of four models, announced the head of the company Johan de Nysschen.

The first car based on the new architecture will be launched in 2017. The new line of models will include various declinations of bodywork, including a sedan and a crossover. The class from which future models will be part of, was not, however, confirmed by the head of Infiniti.

Infiniti and Daimler, currently through its luxury subsidiary, Mercedes-Benz, share many technologies. Mercedes uses small displacement diesel engine of Renault-Nissan for its models of compact and medium-class and Infiniti will take the new A-Class platform for the future compact crossover Q30.

"Within the cooperation, we are open for new projects as long as all partners benefit from them," said Thomas Froehlich, spokesman at Daimler. "We are constantly in talks with each other about many topics. Projects will be communicated as soon as they are approved by all partners."

"Infiniti is a long-burn cycle," said Andy Palmer, Infiniti vice president. "Judge us in 2020, not 2013. Globally, we've gone from 120,000 units a year to 172,000 units last year. We should get close to 200,000 units in our current financial year, and the brand is already very profitable."

Infiniti recently announced that it will build a new plant on North American territory. The exact site has not been chosen yet. They are considering several locations in the U.S. and Mexico. The new production facility, the second in the United States will reduce Infiniti's dependence on plants from their native country, Japan.
