India\'s Mahindra To Launch Quanto SUV In Europe
|   Monday, September 24, 2012
The biggest utility vehicle manufacturer in India, Mahindra & Mahindra, has just launched in the second half of September the eagerly expected Quatro compact sports utility vehicle (SUV). The name comes from the Latin word quantum.

After making an appearance at the Bologna Auto Show in December, the Quanto will go on sale in Italy. Also, the company plans to sell the Quanto to South Africa and Europe.

The car is also known as the mini Xylo, and is based on the Ingenio minivan platform and measures just under 4000 mm long.
It is built to satisfy the needs of middle class families for a compact car, while keeping reasonable prices for an SUV.

"The launch of Quanto, our first compact SUV, is another defining moment in our automotive journey. For the Mahindra Group, the Quanto represents yet another example of our alternative thinking approach. It has been developed keeping in mind the evolving needs of our customers. I am confident that the Quanto will create a new category within the SUV segment while offering a unique value proposition to our customers," said Dr Pawan Goenka, President of Mahindra & Mahindra's Automotive & Farm Equipment Sectors, in a statement.

In India, the Quanto will be sold in four versions, the C2, C4, C6 and C8. The small SUV will sports a new front fascia and will be powered by a 1.5 liter mCR100 engine, which is the newest Common Rail Diesel engine Mahindra has for its SUV. The SUV stands on 15 inches wheels; speaking of wheels, the rear wheels are the ones moving the car.
A 4 wheel drive of the Quanto is currently in development, and that model is thought to carry an even more impressive diesel engine.

The mCR1000 common rail turbodiesel engine uses twin turbochargers. The twin turbo setting, along with the 1.5 liter with 3 cylinders layout, transform the mCR1000 diesel engine into the smallest twin turbo diesel engine currently in the world. The engine produces an impressive 100 horsepower and 240 Nm and is the lightest diesel engine Mahindra has in stock.

It also comes with an intellipark reverse assist, 2 DIN music systems with CD, MP3 and USB and boasts safety features like dual air bags, ABS with EBD as well as a high speed warning system. The vehicle has a granite themed dashboard plus ample utility spaces like 5 bottle holders or snack trays.

For fuel efficiency, the company says 17.2 kilometers per liter are provided with Micro hybrid technology. In India, the new Quanto will go on sale in six colors which include Toreador Red, Diamond White, Java Brown, Fiery Black, Mist Silver and Rocky Beige. The car comes with a 5+2 seating arrangement. The base model-C2 is priced 582,000 rupees (10,778 dollars) and the top end model C8 is priced 736,000 rupees (13,100 dollars).
The Quanto model is expected to go against other budget vehicles, like the Dacia Duster.

It seems the compact SUV segment is attracting a lot of interest, more so than usual, from all automakers, and that is mostly a positive thing.
