Importance of Armored Vehicles in our Lives
|   Thursday, March 20, 2014
Armored vehicles have been under consideration for quite some time now and even though they may seem like untrained leviathans to the naked eye, they have each been designed with a special purpose. These monsters are present to save human lives, not take them. Armored trucks are known as MRAPs or Mine Resistant Ambush Protected Vehicles and have the capability to withstand projectile based ballistics, improvised explosive devices and land mines, apart from less lethal attacks.

Armies around the world have been using improvised armored vehicles for quite a long time now, for carrying personnel in and out of war fields. The most important inspiration perhaps has been the Snatch Land Rover, used by the British Armed Forces back in 1990s. The US army's Humvee is of equal importance in this field, as it is still used by American personnel across the globe.

We can safely say that even though a Humvee is capable of withstanding some of the toughest situations, protecting its passengers, it was ill equipped to protect American soldiers in desert situations in Afghanistan. This as a result forced a few think tanks to come up with a suitable solution fast. This resulted in the formation of a new generation of MRAPs, while United States alone manufactured close to 27,000 units within 2007 – 2013.

Even though the British Army is not as well equipped, they have been adding a number of special task force vehicles, including a Foxhound 4 x 4 and a Mastiff 6 x 6. The ongoing International Armored Vehicles show at Farnborough has a large assortment of MRAPs from around the globe and we are here to ride in a few and test some others for their battle capabilities.

Improvised explosive devices have been in use for quite a while now and are responsible for taking quite a few lives across nations. Normally, an armored vehicle would be sufficiently armed to protect its passengers. However, the locals in Afghanistan use larger devices than their counterparts. Hence, a new design had to be thought of for added protection.

MRAPs have been used successfully around the globe on numerous counts and if we consider the Mercedes Benz G320 CDI 6 x 6's performance – it has been deployed in over 80 critical missions with 0 casualties – we will witness all positive feedbacks. The only downside to these vehicles is their low fuel efficiency and environmental friendliness. The most important function of an MRAP is to transport personnel to safety in a war zone.

Use of high density polymers and other high performance polythene is rampant in these vehicles, as they have sufficient blast absorption capability. These also act as potent weight saving measures. Large six cylindered turbo diesel engines are usually in place, while these setups are mated to an electronically operated transmission system.

Air springs and independent suspension is in place, for all terrain capability. Armored vehicles also find precedence in civilian life, while transporting people of importance, in sensitive areas. Various luxury car makers also provide special armoring on request.
