Hyundai Takes Place As Leader In European Fuel Cell Vehicle Segment
|   Wednesday, December 09, 2015
While car makers around the globe have pursued ways to develop faster and more convenient technologies, Hyundai has taken the lead by creating a hydrogen fuel cell vehicle that gave up entirely on fossil fuels: meet the ix35 Fuel Cell.

In October, Hyundai Motor delivered 50 ix35 Fuel Cell units, which will be offered to customers in Europe. This is how the manufacturer has reached more than 250 units distributed. This transport represent the largest order of hydrogen vehicles in Europe.

Hyundai ix35 Fuel Cell is the first car that is powered by hydrogen, mass produced and marketed in Europe. The models already running on the roads of Europe have traveled cumulatively over 1.2 million kilometers. At the end of 2015, the car will be available in 13 European countries, with Spain and Switzerland joining the 11 countries where it is already sold.

Thomas A. Schmid, Chief Operating Officer at Hyundai Motor Europe, commented: "This latest landmark delivery enhances our leading position in the roll-out of fuel cell vehicles in Europe. With our fuel cell distribution network growing to 13 European countries, we are enhancing our sales and customer service capabilities, making fuel cell electric vehicles more accessible for customers throughout Europe."

In the context of expanding European infrastructure of hydrogen filling stations the manufacturer will continue to develop distribution networks for fuel cell vehicles to provide customers a high level of quality. To support the evolution of fuel cell technology, Hyundai Motor Europe is collaborating since October 2011 with the Hydrogen Fuel Cell Joint Undertaking Organization (FCH-JU). This partnership contributes to technological development and the necessary fuel cell tests, and hydrogen supply in Europe.

In 2014, Hyundai joined the Hydrogen For Innovative Vehicles (HyFIVE) project, a FCH-JU extension program. This action helped expand the hydrogen refueling infrastructure and grant easier access to a greater number of fuel cell vehicles owners in Europe.

These initiatives are part of Hyundai's vision which aims to become a leader in environmental protection by 2020. Launched in 2014, the project 2020.22.2 aims to launch 22 models with lower emissions by 2020, among them being 12 hybrid models, six plug-in hybrid models, two electric cars and two electric Fuel Cell cars.
The ix35 Fuel Cell model is equipped with a 100 kW electric engine (136 hp), which allows a top speed of 160 km / h. It has no harmful emissions, only water vapor is produced. Two hydrogen tanks with a capacity of 5.64 kg, positioned between the rear wheels of the vehicle, give a range of up to 594 km, similar to a conventional vehicle.

Bolzano city already uses hydrogen fueled vehicles and owns five Fuel Cell buses, which were delivered in 2013 as part of the Clean Hydrogen in European Cities (CHIC) project. The IIT (Institute for Innovative Technology in Bolzano, Italy) is the first facility in Italy equipped with a new hydrogen filling station at 700 bar which can store double the amount of hydrogen compared to the previous model, the 350 bar.
