Hyundai Revives Tucson Name For ix35 Replacement
|   Wednesday, February 25, 2015
The Koreans from Hyundai will go back on the decision to abandon the Tucson name in favor of the name ix35, with the replacement of this model scheduled to launch by the end of the year. Hyundai imposed itself on the SUV segment with over one million units sold in Europe starting from 2000, after launching the Santa Fe model.

Hyundai Tucson, the model that was replaced by the ix35, will return to the Korean manufacturer's range in 2015. As explained by the British from Autocar, the Koreans changed their minds regarding the Tucson name change, and prefer to return to it with the replacement of the ix35.

Up to presenting an exhibit at the Geneva Motor Show, Hyundai published a sketch of the future Tucson. The new brand SUV is disclosed as "a big step forward for the Hyundai brand globally" by Peter Schreyer, head of global design, which says that the new model has an athletic presence that will submit many brand-specific design touches.

The future Hyundai Tucson will benefit from angular optical blocks, a well sculptured profile, and a trapezoidal front grille. These features, along with other small design details, are specific to the latest creations of the Hyundai brand. Just like every other car manufacturer in the market, those from Hyundai have their own stylistic signature, found on almost all models in their range. Therefore, in this case, it appears that the base element is the trapezoidal front grille, followed by forms applied to the profile and the angular optical blocks.

The current Hyundai ix35 is expected to phase out of production by the end of this summer, only to be replaced by the Tucson. The ix35's successor will begin selling on the European market by the end of this year, considering the production program of its predecessor. Hyundai gave up the Tucson name five years ago when they launched the ix35 version. At that time the change was intended to unite the Korean manufacturer's range at the model name format level. But this change seems to not have had the desired result by the Koreans.

Commenting on the Tucson, Peter Schreyer, President and Chief Design Officer at Hyundai Motor Group, said: that "Our new compact SUV will be a big step forward for the Hyundai brand globally. The All-New Tucson has a bold and athletic presence and a proud stance. Its design is characterized by flowing surfaces, bold proportions, sharp lines and – most important – our brand signature hexagonal grille."

According to data from JATO Dynamics, European sales of the ix35 went up 5 percent to 93,507 units in 2014. These figures place the model on 4th position best-selling models. All this happened in a region with a very fast growth rate in the compact SUV segment.

World premiere of the new Tucson model will take place at the Hyundai press conference at the 2015 Geneva Motor Show in Hall 1 on March 3, 2015.
Rivals will include the Nissan Qashqai, Kia Sportage and Skoda Yeti.
