Hyundai-Kia Pays Huge Fine for Optimistic Mileage
|   Saturday, November 08, 2014
For years, the auto industry has done a nudge-nudge-wink-wink routine with federal regulators when it has announced the mileage ratings for its many products.

The routine was simply this: the industry tended to be overly generous in its mileage ratings, taking the best results available and using them, rather than taking the more responsible position of using the real figures that were achieved.

Federal regulators, reports Consumer Reports, in response to the industry's dance routine, have responded by taking tougher and tougher measures against automakers until yesterday when the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) slammed Korean automaker Hyundai and its subsidiary Kia with a $350 million fine for their overly optimistic mileage ratings.

Hyundai attributed the problem to incorrect test procedures. The automaker also issued an apology. The company promised, as part of the settlement of this issue, to give gasoline credits to those who purchased one of the affected cars. (Automakers receive credits for exceeding their fuel economy goals.)

In announcing this action, EPA noted that the automaker will lose $200 million in credits and it will pay a fine of $100 million. In addition, the automaker must set up a $50 million independent mileage certification program.

According to the EPA, the issue affected 2011 to 2013 models.
