Hyundai FE Fuel Cell Foreshadows Hydrogen-Powered SUV in 2018
|   Wednesday, March 29, 2017
Many automakers have already stated that in the long term hydrogen is the best solution for green propulsion, surpassing even electrification. In this regard Hyundai has moved beyond statements and is one of the most active developers of this type of propulsion based on fuel cells.

Hyundai unveiled at the Geneva International Motor Show the FE Fuel Cell concept. The new model emphasizes the car manufacturer's commitment to develop vehicles based on fuel cells, part of the brand vision to launch 14 new models with low emissions until 2020.

At the beginning of 2017, with the DavosWorld Economic Forum organization, Hyundai Motor Company joined to the program Hydrogen Council, a global initiative that aims to promote the development and commercialization of vehicles powered by fuel cells.

The company records two decades of research in the field of models based on hydrogen; the ix35 Fuel Cell, respectively Tucson Fuel Cell in some markets, which became in 2013 the first Fuel Cell vehicle series produced, and is currently marketed in 17 countries worldwide.

The concept name - FE (Future Eco) - reflects the innovative technology that complements the vehicle's environmental qualities. One of the most important features is the internal air humidifier, which recycles water issued into the system in order to create a cozy atmosphere in the vehicle.
The sleek shape of the FE Fuel Cell bodywork is inspired by the flow of water - the only type of emission generated.

In addition, the rear air vents have been incorporated to improve aerodynamic performance.
Encouraged by the increasing global demand for clean vehicles, the company continued the program initiated by Ioniq, the first model available in three electric powertrain versions. The FE Fuel Cell version represents the fourth Hyundai generation which uses hydrogen technology.

Compared to the current generation system used for the Tucson/ix35 Fuel Cell, the new Hydrogen cell has lower weight by 20 percent, being 10 percent more efficient. In addition, they benefit from specific power increase by 30 percent.

For ultimate comfort, the FE Fuel Cell concept is equipped with a portable battery pack that is charged with energy from the vehicle to feed passengers devices. Meanwhile, the luggage compartment features a storage space that allows loading an electric scooter.

The FE Fuel Cell variant was designed to travel over 800 kilometers on one tank of hydrogen, given the limited development of refueling infrastructure. The elements of the FE Fuel Cell concept will be used for future Fuel Cell SUV class models, which will be launched in 2018. The car will be equipped with advanced driver, assistance systems while benefiting from extensive range.

Woong Chul Yang, Hyundai Motor Company Vice Chairman declared that "Hyundai Motor has a heritage of building innovative, fuel-efficient vehicles that advance the automotive industry's environmental progress. Our FE Fuel Cell Concept is an important evolution of our pioneering hydrogen leadership, and moves us closer to our vision for a ‘Hydrogen Society', where transportation is clean, efficient and enhances the lives of our customers."
