Hyundai Could Officially Launch the Hydrogen Powered ix35 by 2015
|   Sunday, June 16, 2013
The final test mule of the Hyundai ix35 Hydrogen powered is finally here and the project looks to have been fairly successful considering the fact that there have been no reports of unforeseen activities regarding the vehicle. Hyundai has been working on the hydrogen fuel cell technology since 1998 and the production version of the ix35 is expected to go on sale fall 2015.

Hyundai has leased the ix35 to private operators since February 2013 although looking for one in your neighborhood may prove to be a futile effort as the 1000 units of the ix35 which are to be manufactured by 2015, will not make it to showrooms but will be available as partnership products which Hyundai will be offering to its private partners directly through its dealership network.

There have been no additional improvements made to the already functional drive train of this vehicle, since the prototype was showcased two years back. The compressed hydrogen is packed at 700 bars and two cylinders have been installed in place of the fuel tank. Hyundai claims that the ix35 is capable of covering a distance of 369 Miles on a single tank of fuel while the tanks are capable of storing 5.64 kg of gas at the most.

The best features about the hydrogen cell powered ix35 is that, the vehicle looks like the standard ix35 and handles quite like a normal hatchback. Minor differences are however distinct and the absence of the rear exhaust tips and a prominent front grille are the distinguishing factors which separate the two vehicles. The ix35 is as visually pleasing as it is fun to drive and the battery network recharges itself on regenerative braking.

The instrument cluster is informative and neat and separate indicators mark the available fuel in the tanks. A drive test has recently been conducted and the ix35 manages to impress. There has been no loss of performance and the hydrogen powered vehicle feels just as responsive as its conventional fuel cell cousin. This is a very potent technology and could be the solution to all of humanity's fuel and environment related problems.

However, owning one such vehicle at the moment could turn out to be quite a hassle as no infrastructure for refueling is available at the moment. Therefore, owning a hydrogen powered ix35 could prove to be quite costly at the moment. Hyundai is one of the few car manufacturers who are in favor of a hydrogen power train and 2015 could prove to be a very important year for the company as the new technology will be sent to production.

Hyundai has not revealed an official price for the ix35 although basic speed and performance figures have been announced. Sporting a top speed of 100 MPH, the ix35 can accelerate from 0 – 60 MPH within 12.5 seconds. With 0 CO2 emissions this car could be the most environment friendly vehicle on road if it reaches showrooms fall 2015. This has been a very celebrated project since being conceived.
