How to become a safer driver in 2014
|   Monday, December 23, 2013
Driving is the single most dangerous activity we do on a daily basis. On average, over 80 people are killed every day on US roads and there are more than five and a half thousand crashes each and every year.

No-one starts out the day planning to be a poor and unsafe driver but in-car distractions such as satellite navigation systems, mobile phones and bickering children can mean your attention is momentarily diverted making an accident more likely.
Failing to keep to speed limits is also a major contributor.

The majority of road accidents could be avoided if drivers were to take a few simple steps and precautions before setting off on a journey. Here are some of our top tips to help you become a safer driver in 2014:

Take a driver safety, training course
You may think you learned everything you needed to know about driving when you took your driving test but in fact the test was only one very small part of learning to drive. Since this point you will have picked numerous bad habits and will have become a very different driver to the one you were then.

Driver safety training courses are a great way to allow safe driving professionals to evaluate your current driving skills and suggest actionable ways in which you can become a better and safer driver.

Stick to speed limits
Excessive speeding is a factor in a third of all fatal crashes, yet over 69% of respondents during a recent survey admitted to regularly exceeding the speed limit. Travelling over the speed limit is especially dangerous in poor weather conditions.

- Allow plenty of time to reach your destination so you don't end up rushing to get there
- Adjust your driving to meet road conditions
- Be prepared to quickly adjust to sudden speed reductions
- If you're late, accept it and apologise when you arrive
- ALWAYS wear your seatbelt

Keep calm
If you drive to and from work, you'll spend an average of an hour sitting in your car each and every day, having to deal with some terrible driving behaviour by other people that will most likely make your blood boil and turn you from the nice placid person you usually are, to an angry ranting monster in the blink of an eye.

When you're angry you are likely to drive more erratically and pay less attention to what's happening in front of you, which will make having an accident much more likely.

Turn mobile phones off
Distracted driving is a growing and serious threat to the safety of our roads and with an increasing number of people owning and regularly using mobile phones as part of their everyday lives the problem is set to increase exponentially over the next few years.

Studies have shown that drivers using mobile phones are four times more likely to be involved in a car crash than a driver who doesn't. Why take the risk? To avoid temptation, switch off your mobile phone during the journey.

Never drive when tired
Most of us are aware of the dangers of driving whilst intoxicated but did you know the risks of driving whilst tired can be just as dangerous and a great deal more common than you think.

Sleepiness will slow your reaction time, reduce awareness, impair your judgement and increase your risk of having an accident. It's recommended that you take a short break for every two hours of driving you undertake.
