How The Cars From Roborace, The First Sci-Fi Car Race Without Pilots, Will Look Like
|   Tuesday, May 10, 2016
The first autonomous racing cars will be electric and will have an unusual design without the cockpit. The Roborace competition will debut this year's fall.
Formula E, the first electric single-seater competition in the world, will have, starting from the 2016 - 2017 season, a competition called Roborace, in which autonomous electric cars will participate.

The design of new autonomous cars with 100 percent electrical propulsion was conducted by Daniel Simon, who drew the cars based on the popular film Tron: Legacy and Oblivion.
The new concept does not involve the use of human pilots, being instead an autonomous car without a cockpit with a completely unusual aerodynamic shape was designed. The Roborace model looks downright spectacular, reminiscent of a spaceship that will surely "fly" on the race tracks.

"My goal was to create a vehicle that takes full advantage of the unusual opportunities of having no driver without ever compromising on beauty," declared Simon. "Racing engineers and aerodynamicists have worked with me from the beginning to strike that balance. The Roborace is as much about competition as it is entertainment. Therefore - and quite unusual in today's racing world - beauty was very high on our agenda and we work hard to merge the best performance with stunning styling."

Roborace will line up at the starting line 10 teams with two identical machines, but engineers will be able to modify the algorithm on which autonomous cars will participate in races.
On the technical side of things, it goes without saying that the car could attract manufacturers with big names who are already working on autonomous technology.
Even if sponsors or teams for Roborace have not yet been announced, the flat design of the car offers a great fortune, if it's to arrive in someone's property. Not to mention the success that it can have considering past examples traditionally associated with racing cars, such as Virgin or Red Bull.

Roborace did not release any details about the specifications of the car, although Simon says it will have a lot strength and power. However there is one thing that we know, thanks to Roborace CEO, Denis Sverdlov. He noted that the Roborace cars could reach 300 km / hour (186 mph), which is enough to become the fastest autonomous cars in the world. Even if they don't actually lay claim to that title, the numbers are impressive enough to make sure a lasting name will be forged.

"We are honoured to have Daniel working with us on this project as chief design officer," said Roborace CEO Denis Sverdlov. "His passion and experience are undeniable and I believe it's already set to be one of the most iconic vehicles in automotive history. We nicknamed the competition the ‘global championship of intelligence' as an open challenge to the world's smartest minds, so it's only fitting that the car should be one of the smartest ever to be made, thanks to Daniel it may also be the most beautiful car ever to touch a road surface."
