Honda showcases the Civic 1.6 i-DTEC EX
|   Saturday, February 09, 2013
The Honda Civic 1.6 i-DTEC EX has been revealed and the vehicle is powered by a 1.6 liter turbo diesel engine. This is also the most fuel efficient Civic on the road, providing 94 g/km CO2 emission and 78.5 MPG.

The figures indicate towards a wallet friendly vehicle and owning and maintaining this Civic could be quite an easy task. The current Civic, featuring a 2.2 liter turbo diesel engine was the only economic option in the range and the introduction of the new model will boost sales in the hatchback segment.

The new 1.6 liter engine has been developed for the past five years and Honda hopes that the economy measures of the engine will attract sales in the UK and Europe region. The Civic, although a hatchback, packs in a decent amount of space and is perfectly suited to the European conditions.

The Civic EX is lighter than its predecessor and features a more refined engine. The suspension, engine and minor steering tweaks along with the refinement of the diesel engine make the vehicle fun to drive although it does not fulfill the necessary power requirements of a gear head. However, the tweaks made to the Civic are sufficient for the European customers and though it might not be the best performance vehicle on the road, it is surely the most economic.

Under acceleration, the engine loses the economic feel and its sharpness increases along with the throttle response. The engine is very versatile and elastic and the absence of the roughness present in most diesel engines make the Civic quite torque friendly. Considering the refinement, the Civic does not make the driver feel the pain of driving a diesel. Cruising on asphalt is smooth and the vehicle was designed for long distance cruising.

On test driving the Civic in real world conditions over a distance of 300 miles, the standard fuel efficiency received was a little above 60 MPG. The Civic 1.6 weighs 50 kg less than the 2.2 and is agile and quick around corners. However, Honda has however not worked on the light steering issue and as a result the vehicle is difficult to control even though it is light weight.

Interior space is adequate and the Civic 1.6 i-DTEC EX comfortably accommodates five people. Adequate head, leg and shoulder room makes this a comfortable vehicle and is the most practical vehicle in its range. The Civic has all the assets needed in a car for daily use and is cheaper to own and drive.

Priced at £23,175, the Honda Civic 1.6 i-DTEC EX sports a top speed of 129 MPH. 0 – 60 MPH comes in close to 10.5 seconds and the vehicle is a total package. It looks good, performs and handles well and sports a decent Driving position. It is also quite comfortable and cheap as compared to the Volkswagen Golf and the Ford Focus. Honda is set to boost sales with the launch of this vehicle and this Civic could hit the market by 2014.
