Honda ready to roll out the all new Commuter vehicle
|   Thursday, November 15, 2012
Honda showcases the final form of its all new micro commuting vehicle and this vehicle has received a radical change from its actual concept design which was showcased at the Tokyo International Speed Festival in 2011. The official name of the vehicle is the short distance, micro size EV Commuter and this is the first of its kind in the Honda lineup. Honda has built this vehicle for the Japanese market on a trial basis as the Japanese government is looking at more economical and cheap driving alternatives.

The license for this vehicle is yet to be given and the Commuter is also expected to be given certain privileges over other vehicles. The vehicle is expected to fulfill all the norms of the European criteria and as a result it will be the second vehicle in the category after the Renault Twizy. The dimensions of the vehicle are, 2.5 meter x 1.25 meter x 1.45 meters, length, breadth, height respectively.

The micro Commuter is powered by a rear mounted 1.5kW lithium ion battery and can run approximately 37 miles on a single recharge. Featuring a top speed of 50 MPH, the vehicle is quite efficient within the perimeter of the city. Controlling the vehicle in traffic is like a breeze and it handles pretty efficiently. A clip in tablet computer has been installed with the main frame controls of the Commuter and as a result the electronic controls of the vehicle can be controlled trough the tablet computer.

The Honda micro Commuter can carry two adults in front with two children in the back quite comfortably. There is no luggage space and the vehicle has been kept very light to enable the engine to perform up to a certain mark. However, the vehicle is based on a variable design mark and hence the Commuter has different body styles. This is one of the most efficient hybrid vehicles from the Honda stables and this is the proto type version of the vehicle. The final model is yet to be launched and Honda is hopeful that the vehicle will be accepted in the home market.

The viability of this vehicle in the European market needs to be checked before the vehicle is launched and this vehicle is the perfect vehicle of choice for the people living in the Japanese villages. However, if they need to sell in Europe they will have to feature a minimum standard of safety features as well as luxury components.

Luxury and a basic trim level are of utmost importance in Europe and Honda is aware of these. Hence the company has no current plans of introducing the vehicle is Europe. However, the vehicle could receive a facelift and modification in the future to make it viable for the European market.

However, the handling is quite dead beat and this is mainly due to the lack of electronic assistance in this low powered vehicle. However, once considering the economic criterion and the market segment this vehicle is aimed at, the package seems quite irresistible.
