Honda FCV Concept: 700 Kilometers Range And Series Version Launching In 2016

Honda introduced the FCV concept which foreshadows a production model scheduled to be released in 2016. For now, only the version for the market in Japan was confirmed.

Honda introduced the concept FCV in its home country, a hydrogen-powered model announcing a maximum range of 700 kilometers. The production version of this concept is scheduled to debut in March 2016, the Japanese brand representatives say.

The FCV Concept is the successor to the FCX Clarity, the first hydrogen-powered production model offered to the public.
Compared with the FCX Clarity, the FCV has a fuel cell system whose dimensions were reduced by 33 percent, but provides increased performance by 60 percent over the unit used by the FCX Clarity. Improved results are due to the increased density of the cell, which provides 3.1 kW / liter. In addition, the hydrogen model has a capacity large enough to provide a range of 700 kilometers.

Honda developed a high-pressure supply system which allows hydrogen refilling in about three minutes, just like a car with an internal combustion engine. The FCV concept from Honda can play the role of a mini-power plant using an external drive developed specifically for the Japanese manufacturer. This technology could provide electricity for household customers obtained from hydrogen through the fuel cell system of Honda's FCV.

Honda did not specify which markets will see their series version of the hydrogen-powered model, when it will debut in series version. Takanobu Ito, Honda CEO, confirmed since fall 2012 the launch of a hydrogen-powered model offered in a series number. That vehicle was to be break even easier thanks to the sharing of costs between multiple development centers. Also at that time, Takanobu Ito, announced that the replacement of FCX Clarity will be sold in Europe, Japan and the United States, so the chances that the future FCV series to be sold in Europe are quite large, although there is not yet a power supply network ready to service vehicles powered by hydrogen.

As demonstrated by the Americans from Tesla, the development of such a network is possible in a very short time, while there are enough customers in countries.
"Honda views hydrogen as a high-potential, next-generation energy carrier due to the fact that hydrogen can be generated from various energy sources and is easily transportable and storable", said the carmaker in the official press release.

The biggest difference between the current Honda FCV Concept and the one shown last year in L.A., called FCEV for fuel-cell electric vehicle, seems to rest on styling: it is less futuristic than its predecessor's was due to tighter-fitting sheet metal.

The powertrain layout allows a full cabin package that holds five adults and also will make it possible to transform the car into multiple models. Of course that will happen in the future when use of FCVs is more widespread. Honda is expected to reveal more details on this issue and more at the 2014 L.A. auto show.
