Honda FCEV Concept Heralds The Future Of Hydrogen Vehicles
|   Sunday, November 24, 2013
Honda has brought to the Los Angeles Auto Show the FCEV concept (Fuel Cell Electric Vehicle). It presents the aesthetic features that will inspire the successor to the FCX Clarity, the vehicle powered by hydrogen produced in series by those from Honda.

The concept boasts a new generation of propulsion train that is able to provide autonomy of over 480 km on only one tank of hydrogen. The innovative FCEV concept from Honda is the integration of the entire propulsion system with fuel cell under the hood, which allows the introduction of a five-seat passenger compartment and a generous luggage compartment, according to Honda.

Unlike electric cars, the Honda FCEV is powered with hydrogen so refueling it only takes three minutes. In addition, the fuel system is 60 percent stronger than that of the FCX Clarity, thanks to the fuel cell with a power density of 3 kW / L. The series version of this powertrain will be available from 2015, according to Honda representatives. Based on a collaboration with General Motors, this powertrain could arrive under the hoods of the Detroit models, the two sides having signed a partnership in July 2013.

The partnerships was about the two, Honda and General Motors, agreeing to jointly develop a new generation of fuel cells and components meant to be on the road by 2020.

The Honda FCX was the first vehicle powered by hydrogen to see series produced. As rarly as 2003, it boasted the ability to start and operate at temperatures below the freezing point of water, and was the first fuel cell vehicle available for the average Joe to lease. Honda has offered the FCX model only in California, under a special test program. Besides cost, hydrogen fueled vehicles suffer from the same problem as electric vehicles, which is a lack of dedicated filling stations infrastructure.

"The Honda FCEV Concept hints at Honda's future direction for fuel-cell vehicles," said Tetsuo Iwamura, president and CEO of American Honda Motor. "While this car is a concept, it points toward a very real future."

The next generation Honda FCEV is believed to deliver a driving range of over 300 miles (about 480 km) with a fast refueling time (at a pressure of 70 MPa) close to three minutes.

"The Honda FCEV Concept not only sets our direction for our next generation fuel-cell vehicle in 2015, but for future improvements in electric drive technology," said Mike Accavitti, senior vice president of American Honda. "The advancements we are making are substantial, meaningful and very real."

Meanwhile, Ford, Daimler, and Nissan-Renault formed a partnership to make a common fuel cell propulsion system. The original aim was to such vehicles, from all three companies, out on the road by 2017.

At the Tokyo show this week, CEO Carlos Ghosn stated that Nissan is delaying its fuel cell vehicle, because infrastructure is poor and consumers are slow to accept this tech.

"I would be very curious and interested to see competitors who say they are going to mass market the car in 2015," he declared. "Where is the infrastructure? Who's going to build it?"
